6. A Review of e-Learning Readiness of
Primary School Teachers in Hong Kong
A one-month questionnaire survey with all the 482 primary schools
in Hong Kong
72.20% of local primary schools participated in the questionnaire
survey (N = 348)
The principal or his/her representative in each surveyed school
anonymously completed the web-based questionnaire in a “self-
administered” approach in December 2012
Four main questions covered the themes of IT integration into subject
teaching and professional development for IT in education
7. Current Situations of IT Integration for e-
Learning: Teachers’ Extent of Using IT for
Teaching
Teachers across different subject areas in general often used IT for subject
teaching, with mean ratings above 4 (“a lot”)
Computer/IT subject teachers nearly “always” (with the mean rating closing
to the level of 5) used IT in subject teaching

School Teachers in Hong Kong
Local primary school teachers are generally confident of and adapted
to the use of IT for learning and teaching across different subjects
There is a trend of using emerging technology for learning and
teaching, apart from the digital devices commonly found in school
Local primary school teachers have many professional development
opportunities to enhance their capacity to continuously integrate IT
into learning and teaching
There is a trend of joining interschool sharing sessions, apart
from the internal sharing sessions commonly provided by schools
9. Reflection on the e-Learning Readiness of
Primary School Teachers in Hong Kong
The teacher-centered teaching paradigm commonly implemented in
local primary schools at present makes
primary school teachers lacked of rich experience in the
pedagogical use of IT for promoting active, constructive and
interactive learning under the one-computer to one-student setting
typical for digital classrooms
existing professional development unable to fully support
teachers to build confidence and competency in engaging
students in active, constructive and interactive learning desirable
for digital classrooms
10. Ways Forward for e-Learning Readiness:
Implications for Professional Development
Professional development in future should be
sustainable
scalable
To better prepare teachers for the long-term and impactful changes in
teaching motivations and teaching practices for the promotion of
