AS MEDIA STUDIES: TELEVISION DRAMA
We are going to use four sequences from the BBC3 drama BODIES to analyse how
editing techniques construct a variety of messages and help build representations of
the medical profession, differing levels of social status and different forms of drama.
The first three sequences we will look at come form the very first episode and the
fourth sequence comes from the start of the second episode.
1. Start of the episode > Buzzes the ward
Induction into hospital life. It is main protagonist Rob Lake’s first
day in his new hospital role. How does the editing ensure we feel
close to him and understand his feelings in this hectic new
environment? Do any other technical aspects work with the editing to
reinforce our understanding of his situation?
2. Resume Dvd > movement of patients names on the list
Rob Lake is an ordinary working class protagonist. His immediate
boss Roger Hurley is upper middle class. How do we know and how
do we feel about the two men? How is a contrast between the two
created and what messages about the men/their class status are
constructed?
3. Movement of patients names > “I just said we’ll deal with this
later”
As the sequence progresses names are switched on the theatre list.
How is the sequence edited to deliver maximum dramatic impact?
