3. 1. CHAPTER 1. SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT
1 Waste Management Problem in Addis Ababa
Addis Ababa is the capital city of Ethiopia, it established before 100 years ago.
Kirkos Sub City is one of the sub cities in Addis Ababa. We choose this sub city
because of the major problem in this sub city. But the Waste Management is a
major challenge. Concerning waste management system, there are many
governmental and non-governmental bureaus working on the problem. But none
of them can manage it. Therefore everyone of as should start thinking to solve
the problem.
2 Main Causes of waste Management Problem
There are a lot of poor waste management system causes, some of those are:
Poor Culture of waste management system,
Population Settlements Management and Urbanization,
Low awareness,
No Proper location, Descriptive and not Enough Waste collection
materials,
Law, regulation and legislation implementations are not effectively
applicable,
Collection and transportation problem of waste management.
3 Detail about the Causes of waste Management Problem
Poor Culture of waste management system
Communities Culture and Tradition has a big influence on waste
management system. In our culture, there is a low concept and
awareness or know how to handle waste. The poor culture of waste
management causes bad impact on the living standards and on the
environment. The reckless behavior of the community on Solid waste
management make our city dirty.
PopulationSettlements ManagementandUrbanization
To control the adverse impact of waste a good urbanization is required. Poor
urban settlement causes a sophisticate environment. If there is no planned
solid waste management system; sewerage system; water supply distribution
systems; and other necessary infrastructure, it make a negative impact on
4. waste management system. Unplanned population settlement causes
pollution to the environment.
Low awareness
A low awareness is given concerning waste management from
households, schools, public or private sectors. Every sector leave its
waste disposal outside of its fence.
No Proper location, Descriptive and not Enough Waste
collectionmaterials,
To handle a waste properly, there should be manageable collection
system. It requires to put the collection materials in equal distance and
sufficiently. But in our cases there is collection materials in some corners.
But not properly puts in order to distance; also not inviting to put in to it.
It is not enough to handle the waste.
Law, regulation and legislation implementation is not
effectively applicable,
There is a proclamation about solid waste management proclamation no.
513/2007. But there is no effective implementation and knowledge of
the proclamation.
4 Effects of waste Management Problem
It causes health problem for the community;
It causes a negative environmental impact;
It make re cycling difficult.
5 Means of solution for waste Management Problem
As we discussed the causes and effects, there are solutions to implement. These
solutions are:-
Poor Culture of waste management systemand Low
awareness
To develop a good traditions and awareness the solution is education. Teaching and
practices should be done in every family, community, schools, in public or in private
sectors. Everyone needs to be responsible to manage every disposals of waste. By
making traditions, we will make our environment clean.
5. No Proper location, Descriptive and not Enough Waste
collectionmaterials,
To solve this problem, we need to put the collection materials
Put enough amount of materials and in calculated distance wise,
Clearly descriptive, where to put recyclable or other materials,
Easy and accessible to put wastes in to in it,
Central collecting materials are required in villages, and
The transportation system of waste should be properly planned and
manageable.
Law, regulation and legislation implementation is not
effectively applicable,
As we discussed above, we have a proclamation concerning waste management. It
should implement and control properly.
Some of our stakeholders are the beneficiaries (the community), Addis Ababa water
Supply and Sanitation Authority, Addis Ababa City Administration, Addis Ababa Police,
Community Policing, Kebeles, Weredas, and etc…
By putting those stakeholders for discussion, we should aware why and what should do
to solve the Solid Waste Management System applicable

ProjectPurpose
The purpose of the SOLID WASTE DISPOSAL Project is to ensure solid waste is managed in such a way
that protects both public health and the environment. This project works hard to help all societies of
Cherkos Subcity to manage better their solid wastes.
Objectives (in business terms) Describe the measurable outcomes of the project, e.g., reduce costby xxxx orincrease quality toyyyy
To ensure clean city that protects both public health and the environment by delivering waste collecting
materials in short distance gap and awaring the society and students together with city administration
and other stakeholders.
Deliverables List the high-level “products” to be created(e.g., improvedxxxx process, employeemanual onyyyy)
Creating clean and green city
7. Scope List what the projectwill andwill notaddress (e.g., this projectaddresses units thatreport into theOffice of Executive Vice President. Units
that report into the Provosts Office are not included)
This projectwill consistofcreating a clean city by delivering waste collecting materials and byawaing Kirkos sub city socity

1 Detail Focus Areas Requirements Collection
We needto considerthe followingthingsto requirementcollectioncase:-
Benchmarking review the latest papers and systems in Addis Ababa and other similar
cities,
Dissections will made with stakeholders, to justify the requirements and prepare the
processingprocedures,
Use or Identify innovative ideas and solutions for the solid waste management problems,
Needtodefine howtoteachthe community,
Surveyingthe village topography,

12. 3. CHAPTER 3. PROJECT BUDGET AND
ESTIMATION BASICS
Estimating of project budget is essential, therefore we here estimate the rough
estimation of our project.
Cost is require for a lot things. Some of these costs are for following purposes
For stakeholder meeting purposes
Allowances,
Coffee, tea and other ceremonies
other un seen events and fees
for Innovationand sample materials preparation
reviewing computing innovative ideas
Selecting and preparing materials
other unseen payments and contingencies
Implementing the project
It takes the major cost of the project
To summarize the above cases we use the following table
Temporary Rough Cost Estimation
Type Cost in Birr
stakeholder meetings 1,500,000.00
Innovation and sample material preparation 3,000,000.00
Implementation of the project 45,000,000.00
Sub Total 49,500,000.00
10% contingencies 4,950,000.00
20% Management contingencies 9,900,000.00
15% VAT 7,425,000.00
Total Amount of Cost 71,775,000.00
13. The rough estimated cost of our project is 71,775,000.00 ( Seventy One Million
Seven Hundred Seventy Five Thousands Birr Only)
