46. Partnership Profile San Jose-Edison Academy Since its inception, San Jose-Edison Academy has shown steady improvement in school wide proficiency in Math and English Language Arts. In 2010, approximately 80% of students were proficient in Math, almost double from 2002 when proficiency levels were at 41.8%. 78% of students are proficient in English Language Arts in 2010, up from 42% in 2002. We won’t stop looking for ways to improve our school until we are at 100% proficiency. 47. Partnership Profile Lincoln Charter School In 1999, the School District of the City of York in Pennsylvania was struggling with student achievement. Schools were not performing well, with students at Lincoln Elementary schools performing at the lowest level in the district. The superintendent, with the support of a group of parents and teachers from Lincoln Elementary School, sought a new approach to help improve the school. Lincoln Charter School consistently outperforms the other elementary schools in the York City School District. From 2002 to 2009, PSSA Reading scores have risen by 25.2 points at Lincoln Charter School, as compared to other schools that have risen on average 14 points. 48. Partnership Profile Las Vegas The Clark County School District (CCSD) is the 5th largest school district in the country, serving nearly 300,000 students. In 2001, Superintendent Carlos Garcia sought a breakthrough program that would help the district’s lowest performing schools increase student achievement. EdisonLearning was selected to partner with six of the district’s lowest performing schools. These schools had a high number of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), as well as a large percentage of Free and Reduced Lunch (FRL) students. From the time our partnership began, students at EdisonLearning Partnership Schools have shown increased achievement in the areas of Reading and Math. In addition, length of partnership has a direct and positive impact on student achievement. “ In 2001 we were struggling academically. 49. Serving the LEP and FRL Populations Las Vegas CCSD has 21 Empowerment elementary schools in the district. Empowerment schools are given greater autonomy and accountability to increase student achievement. They evolved from the belief that, if schools are to be held accountable for student achievement, they should be given the freedom to determine what will best accomplish their goals . EdisonLearning Partnership Schools are similar to Empowerment Schools in that both are given the autonomy to determine how to best accomplish their goals. The two types of schools are different, however, in the make-up of their student populations. EdisonLearning Partnership Schools have significantly larger LEP and FRL populations. Students attending EdisonLearning Partnership Schools show a higher rate of gain on Nevada Criterion Referenced Tests (CRTs). Even with the added challenges these groups encounter, such as mastery of a new language in the case of LEP students, these schools have been able to close the achievement gap.
