This document discusses a proposed consortium called BIOPOOL that aims to digitize and share histological images and clinical data from biobanks across Europe. The motivation is to allow biobanks and hospitals to exchange, process, understand and exploit digitized tissue samples. BIOPOOL would interconnect different biobanks and aggregate their data on a central server. This would provide services for diagnosis, education and research by allowing search and retrieval of images and associated clinical data. The consortium involves 7 partners from 4 countries with different profiles working to develop innovations like content-based image retrieval and tools to support these goals.
