Abstract photography focuses on shape, form, color, texture and pattern without showing the entire subject. French photographer Eddy De Azevedo takes abstract photos inspired by Mark Rothko using everyday materials like fabrics, bottle caps and books. He layers the objects to fit the frame and groups them by type, achieving color-focused compositions similar to Rothko's paintings. The document discusses Azevedo's process and compares one of his photos to a Rothko painting, showing their similarities in color and layout.

1. WHAT IS ABSTRACT PHOTOGRAPHY?
Abstract photography focuses on shape,
form, colour, texture and pattern. Usually,
the viewer of the photograph often cannot
see the whole object in the photograph and
also more than likely the subject of the
photograph is only a small part of the
meaning of the photograph.
2. EDDY DE AZEVEDO
Eddy De Azevedo is a French photographer who is inspired by Mark Rothko and 1950s
color field paintings. Azevedo uses everyday materials such as fabrics, broken lighters,
bottle caps, books and paper to his photographs. The way that Eddy De Azevedo
frames his pictures (he puts his collections of objects into a shape that perfectly fits the
frame of the camera. He uses ‘Office’ for paper, ‘Dressing’ for fabric and ‘Walking my
Dog’ for objects that he has collected whilst taking his dog out for a walk.
3. From the photograph (on the left) you can tell that Eddy De Azevedo
uses layers in his photographs, for example with stacked paper, stacks of
books. He seeks and accomplishes an effect where the viewer forgets
about the objects in the photograph and focuses on the colors used
instead.
From this comparison you can
see that there are a lot of
similaraties such as colour and
composition of both
photograph and painting.
AZEVEDO ROTHKO
4. MY OPINION
I have chosen the photographer Eddy De
Azevedo because although the photographs
Azevedo takes are abstract he takes a
minimalistic yet contemporary approach to
abstract, just as the artist Rothko does. I like
how he uses a lot of different colours in a
consecutive order of shades. I am going to re-create
his work by creating layers with objects
like pens, books, bus and train tickets and
fabrics.
5. MY RESPONSE
For my response to Eddy De Azevedo’s work I
have tried to recreate some of his
photographs using coloured paper,
highlighters, and objects from my bag
including my phone, train tickets and make-up.
MY OPINION OF MY RESPONSE
I like how my responses have turned out because
the collections of items I have photographed
reflect the work of Azevedo creates in quite an
accurate way. However if I were to do this again I
would try using different objects like bottle caps
or lighters like the original photographer does also
using similar colors for one photograph in a similar
style of the photographer.
