• Explored due to their current use in the field
  of Audiology
• Behaviorist Perspective
• Believed that human behavior is affected by
  environmental/external forces
   – Based on this, believed that this could be used to
     motivate humans to respond in specific ways
Washington & Freire
• Both Worked to educate minorities
• Freire
  – Worked on illiteracy in Brazil
• Washington
  – African American education post-slavery
Adult Education Programs
•    Focused on audiology related-programs:
    1. Hearing Health Fair
       - Held at Irvington Methodist Church in Indianapolis
       - Teaches church members about hearing loss, testing,
           and treatment
    1. Indiana Speech Language Hearing Association
       (ISHA)
       - Educational organization for students and professionals
       - Aids and promotes best practices in the fields of
            audiology and speech pathology.
Adult Education

•    Focused on organizations who worked to educate
     those underprivileged
    1.    The Highlander Folk School
         - Founded in 1932
         - Helped provide education and training to adults in poverty
         - Influence on the Civil Rights movement and helped promote
               desegregation
    1.   United Nations Educational Scientific & Cultural
         Organizations (UNESCO)
         - Founded in 1946
         - Education of underprivileged adults
         - Helped build peace and eradicate poverty through
         education
         - Promotion of the idea that all have the right to education-
         any race, age, gender, socioeconomic status

Initial Views of Adult
            Education
• Our group initially had varying
  knowledge on the field of adult
  education
• Assignments 2-4 helped us explore the
  many roles of adult education, from the
  past to the present
Leading Adult Educators
• These adult educators helped create a
  foundation for adult education
• Illustrated the different ways that adults
  learn so that programs could be tailored
  uniquely to them
Unique Adult Education
         Programs
• Adult Education occurs in a multitude of
  environments
• Many of the programs we focused on
  used a group style to facilitate learning
• Adult Education can cover a range of
  topics, if desired by learners or
  educators
Important Adult Education
       Organizations
• Actively support and continue to change
  the face of adult education
• Has a global impact on adult education
• Meant to better the lives of the
  underprivileged
What Have We Learned
• Adult Education takes on various roles
  in the content it provides, and the
  reasoning for the courses
• The face of adult education is
  continually changing
• Serves to empower participating adult
  learners

In the 21st Century
• Change will be constant
• The role of adult education will continue
  to grow in importance
• High demand jobs demand technically
  competent people
• Not only technically competent but
  culturally sensitive

  Western European dominance to a
  more diverse worldview is happening

  practice adult education
  – Highly developed ethical standards while
    seeking to advance the understanding of
    adult learners
• Avoids the elitism of professionalization
Flexibility is a Must
• Not only flexibility in the way we view
  the world, but in the way education has
  been traditionally delivered
• Education must focus on the needs and
  concerns of those whom it served
• Individuals will be valued as delivery will
  not be locked into one concept
Adult Education is
         Empowered
• Empowerment in Adult Education takes
  place when it serves to empower the
  least powerful in society
• Education serves to break to bonds of
  oppression by allowing a greater
  number of individuals to democratically
  participate in society
