2. What was Prohibition?
• Prohibition was the outlaw of manufacturing, selling and
consumption of alcohol in the United States starting in
1917, and lasting until 1933.
3. The Green Door Tavern in Chicago
This is an original Speakeasy from the 1920’s, still in operation
today. A Speakeasy was a saloon that sold illegal alcohol during
prohibition. Look around the area, list buildings that seem to be
from the 1900’s or earlier. Make a map of what you found.
4. St. Valentine’s Day Massacre
• The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre was organized by Al Capone. Al Capone owned Speakeasies,
bootlegged and an infamous gangster. He wanted to take out a rival gang in Chicago, and
ultimately went to Alcatraz after being convicted for his many crimes.
• Take a look around at the modern day site of the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. What differences
do you see? What similarities do you see?

• Go to the Crime Museum in
Washington DC and take
pictures of moonshining,
prohibition, gangs from
around the early to mid
1900’s etc.
• Was there a lot of displays
from this time era? Were
there only a few displays?

7. Moonshine
Making moonshine during prohibition was a way of life for many people up in the
hills in southern states. The Maggodee Creek bridge (above) in Franklin County
Virginia, was one of the many bridges used during the transportation of moonshine.
