Trip to Chinatown for Univ

3. -The Chinese arrived in Chicago in 1869 after the First
Transcontinental Railroad was built
-First lived in the loop until 1912 when they moved to the South
Side to Cermak Avenue ( led by On Leong Merchants Association)
-Leader of the On Leong Merchants Association, Jim Moy, decided
to construct a Chinese-style structure in Chicago’s developing
Chinatown
-The On Leong Merchants Association Building opened in 1928 and
stands to be the finest large Chinese-style structure in any North
American Chinatown
-Referred to as Chinatown’s “city hall,”
-During the late 1980’s, Chinatown grew dramatically as more
buildings were constructed and people began to move into the
community

7. This was the first trip to Chinatown for all members of
our group. We had only known of Chinatown through
television shows/movies and from our friends who had
visited. We enjoyed seeing the diversity Chinatown offered.
Each store we visited gave us a unique view of the Chinese
culture. Everything from advertisements to menus and signs
were written in Chinese. Very little English was spoken in
Chinatown.
This trip helped spark our curiosity about the diverse
cultures and neighborhoods in Chicago. Each neighborhood
is unique, but essential in the Chicago experience. We can
learn more about our city and ourselves by visiting each
neighborhood.
