Philipsburg Manor and the Founding of Historic Hudson Valley
1.
2. A nonprofit organization that focuses its efforts
on the celebration and revitalization of the
numerous landmarks and important historic
sites across the Hudson Valley region, Historic
Hudson Valley has its roots in a single site:
Philipsburg Manor. The wealthy philanthropist
John D. Rockefeller, whose efforts at historic
preservation included the financing of the
Colonial Williamsburg project, assisted with the
purchase of Philipsburg Manor in 1940. Then
called Philipse Castle, the property was in
danger of being demolished despite its rich
history.
3. While he initially financed the property's
purchase for the Historical Society of the
Tarrytowns, Rockefeller went on to establish
Sleepy Hollow Restorations in order to
revitalize locations such as Sunnyside,
Washington Irving's home, a landmark close
to Philipsburg Manor. Today, the
organization, which became Historic
Hudson Valley in 1987 in order to expand its
reach, continues to assist in the operation
of Philipsburg Manor, which provides a
glimpse into America in the 1750s.
