This document discusses a unique water treatment process from SureWaters that can reduce operational costs for industries. It introduces a process that can eliminate chemicals, allow for water reuse internally, and potentially create a valuable byproduct. 10. What are the characteristics?

11. • Electrocoagulation is an electrochemical method of treating
polluted water; whereby sacrificial electrodes corrode at
the anode face and release an active coagulant, causing
pollutants to cluster together into semi-solids.
• This is accompanied by gas release on the cathode face of
the electrodes; which integrates into the growing pollutant
clusters, causing them to become buoyant.
• Pollutant removal can occur by ‘coagulation only’ which
causes pollutants to sink or by ‘coagulation and flotation’
which causes pollutants to float.

13. An electrocoagulation reactor comprises sacrificial electrodes
(Aluminium or Iron) that:
• dose the polluted water with a coagulating agent of
metal cations (positively charged ions e.g. Aluminium
Al3+).
• produce electrolytic gas bubbles into the flow
(Hydrogen).
The process can be characterised by:
• Fast rate of pollutant removal,
• Highly concentrated and shear resistant pollutant ‘float’,
• Compact size,
• Operational simplicity,
• Relatively low capital and very low operational costs.

 Fluid mixing and mass transfer at the sacrificial electrodes.
