WHAT IS AN ECOSYSTEM?
• An ecosystem is a community
of living things that interact
with each other and with the
physical world.
EXAMPLES OF ECOSYSTEMS
• Desert.
• Tundra.
• Grasslands.
• Tropical rainforest.
• Coniferous forests.
• Temperate decidious forests.
• Mediterranean forests.
DESERT
• Climate: Arid or desert climate.
• Located: North Africa, Asia
Minor, and central and western
Australia. Arizona, United
States; northern Mexico, South
America and part of Central Asia.
• Animals: Bobcat, coyote, barn
owl, desert tortoise, iguana…
• Plants: Pencil plant, paddle plant,
living stone, zebra cactus, golden
barrel…
PRODUCERS
• A living thing that can make
its own food.
• Plants, trees, flowers…
CONSUMERS
• A living thing that gets its
food from eating other living
things.
• Polar bear eating a fish, a
bird eating a berry, a zebra
eating grass.
DESCOMPOSERS
• A living thing that breaks
down other living thing
things to get nutrients and
energy.
• Vultures eat dead animals,
worms and beetles eat dead
decaying plants…
POPULATION
• A group of living things that
live in the same place at the
same time.
• Many penguins live in the
artic; many elephants live in
the African Savanna.
COMMUNITY
• When different populations
live together in the same
habitat and interact with
each other.
• Elephants, giraffes, and
zebras all live together in
the Savanna.
HABITAT
• A habitat is a home
environment for plants and
animals or other organisms.
