This slides refer to our EU Training Needs Assessment - www.ecostarhub.com/reports/
The document reports the results of a Training Needs Assessment (TNA) survey conducted in the field of entrepreneurship, markets and economics of ecosystems and biodiversity. It targets university students -undergraduates and graduates, including Ph.D. students- within European countries. The survey was conducted through an online questionnaire aiming to gain a better understanding of the level of entrepreneurship and innovation education within forestry and environmental university courses in Europe, in order to highlight existing skill gaps and emphasizing areas for future potential improvements.
The ECOSTAR is the research-enterprise impact hub that promotes entrepreneurship and innovation for biodiversity-based business.
IMPACT HUB > promoting the start up of new business initiatives with a positive impact on environment and society
RESEARCH-BUSINESS > Linking universities and business, providing networking and practical and business oriented training
BIODIVERSITY AND ES > It
The Fledge Model:
Fledge Environment Fund
Contracts within ECOSTAR selected startups will be between Fledge and the startup.
If the business does not succeed, nothing is owed to Fledge
Impact driven: No compromises! Compulsory positive social, environmental and governance impacts. The Nature-Accelerator is powered by Fledge Environment. Fledge is a community of impact investors who share our vision in helping foster businesses that do good through for-profit businesses.
Social Innovation: Social innovation refers also to the creation of new forms of networks and practices among people and organizations in response to societal, economic and environmental challenges. Innovation doesn’t happen only with technology: people, institutions and networks should be at the core of any innovative, socially-driven business model. Today we read a lot about new business models, disruptive innovation, digital transformation, amazing startups but …..”Development is about transforming the lives of people, not just transforming economies.” Joseph Stiglitz, author of “The price of inequality” and Nobel Prize for Economics 2001.
New technologies: new business models should take advantage under the concept of “Industry 4.0” goes the current trend of automation and data exchange in manufacturing technologies. It includes cyber-physical systems, the Internet of things and cloud computing.
Circular and bio economy: Re-thinking the economy, a continuous positive development cycle that preserves and enhances natural capital, optimizes resource yields, by minimizing risks and increasing renewable flows. It works effectively at every scale. Currently, more than 40 nations worldwide are proposing actions and strategies to boost their bioeconomy. In Europe, bioeconomy is already worth EUR 2 trillion in annual turnover and account for more than 20 million jobs (EC, 2012). Bioeconomy is expected to grow up to a market value of EUR 40 billion and 90,000 new jobs in 2020.
“Direct ecosystem land management” = the business model should focus on the direct management of one or more identified ecosystems (forests, wetlands, etc.), using an ecosystem approach to facilitate/support the production, delivery and marketing of well-defined ecosystem services (please refer to CICES classification version 4.3).
These initiatives should be outstanding in terms of:
Success of their business models;
Affinity with the concept of MBIs for biodiversity and ecosystem services conservation (such as payments for ecosystem service (PES), certification, labeling and marketing, etc.).
Level of general sustainability of the model (from a social, economic and environmental perspective);
Level of innovation of the business model (we are interested in looking at innovative ideas rather than traditional ones).
Level of reinvestment on the natural capital or on particular ecosystem services;
This slide explains what are KA project in general terms. What are the objectives of the call that ECOSTAR won.
