GROUND WATER
PRESERVATION AND
SUSTAINANBLE
DEVELOPMENT
What are the effects of Ground
Water Depletion?
Ground water is the major source of drinking water in India. Pumping
water out of the ground faster than it is replenished over the long term
causes problems. The volume of ground water in storage is decreasing
in many areas which is caused by sustained groundwater pumping.
Some of the negative effects of groundwater depletion are:
(1) Drying up of wells
(2)
(3)
(4)
(5)

Reduction of water in streams and lakes
Deterioration of water quality
Increased pumping costs
Land subsidence
