Ecological succession is the natural process of change in species composition of an area over time. Primary succession begins in areas without soil, like volcanic rock, where pioneer species like lichens slowly form soil. As the soil layer thickens, simple plants grow and add organic material. Eventually trees and larger wildlife establish a climax community. Secondary succession starts with existing soil and occurs faster after a disturbance like a forest fire, as pioneer species replace what was there before.
