The global pandemic has had a massive socio-economic impact on the urban mobility sector. As the government eases lockdown measures, urban mobility is becoming a huge focus of anxiety, with a large number of people considering when and how to resume travel. This implies that the transport system will have to be re-designed such that passengers are at a safe enough distance from each other. Serious questions like: will personal vehicles become the safest means to travel? What about the safety of people who cannot afford personal vehicles? What will happen to the present mode of public transport, will need answers.
This report titled, “Resetting for Urban Mobility 2020+ in India” discusses challenges brought in the urban mobility space by the COVID-19 pandemic. The document highlights the key measures to be taken at both the government and individual levels as public
transportation across the globe begins to unlock. Viewpoints from London, Singapore, and India – on the future of urban planning and public transport in response to the ongoing pandemic have also been discussed in this document. Experts from these counties contribute to a deeper understanding of safety measures adopted.

This document concludes by looking at how a holistic approach is essential when driving sustainable developments, as well as how the future of a resilient city is to believe in an ecosystem where all stakeholders and the environment have a symbiotic relationship. Furthermore, as the world transitions to adopt the learnings from recent responses to emerging challenges at scale, we come to see more resilient and sustainable strategies to drive the growth of cities around the globe.
This article aims to present how to build smart and sustainable cities to provide their rational management, improve the quality of life for the entire population, the sustainable development of the city and the democratization of government decisions with the participation of the entire population. Every city achieves the status of a smart city when its managers consider it as a system and make use of information technology in its planning and control process, counting on the effective support of its population. Every smart city requires the use of information technology with the use of various devices connected to the IoT (Internet of Things) network to manage the city's operations and services rationally and connect with its citizens. Information technology allows city managers to interact directly with their executing agencies and the population and monitor what is happening in the city and how the city is evolving in real time. Information technology must be used to improve the quality, performance and interactivity of urban services, reduce costs and consumption of resources, and increase contact between citizens and government. A smart city can be better prepared to respond to the challenges faced by its managers and its population. Every city will reach the status of a smart city when the city's humanization goals are achieved, with the improvement of the quality of life for the entire population, the city's sustainable development and the democratization of government decisions with the participation of the entire population.

In less than 40 years, 70% of the world’s population will reside in our cities. This rapid
migration will push both current and future urban centres to their seams and expand industrial
and residential infrastructures beyond their breaking points.
This eye-opening fact raises important questions that must be considered by cities around the
world. Can this growth be done in a sustainable way? Will cities be able to reduce their
environmental impact and carbon emissions? Will we be able to meet the sustainability
challenges brought on by regulation and the impact of this massive growth? And, will we
expand in ways which ensure communities are enjoyable places to live and promote social
equality?
We can answer affirmatively to these concerns, and re-design our cities with these thoughts
in mind. With the movement towards smart cities, the urban centres we live in can become
more efficient, livable, and sustainable in both the short and long term, thanks to involvement from city, citizens, and businesses.
Concept note on 100 Indian smart citiesPhani Mohan K
The 35-page blue print includes various suggestions on operational procedures, approval process for proposals, nature and extent of Central Government support on financing, capacity building, which would be useful for further discussions.
It outlines in detail about the several facilities that would be developed in smart cities including reliable utility services, efficient social infrastructure and a smart transport system, which would restrict the travel time within the city to 30 to 45 minutes, 100 per cent coverage of road network with storm water drainage network and 100 per cent access to toilets.
All smart cities will need to have a master plan valid for the next 10 years in addition to having digitised spatial maps, regularly updated open data platforms, amongst other benchmarks specified in the Annexures of the concept note.
Physical infrastructure such as the urban mobility system, the housing stock, energy system, water supply system, drainage system, solid waste management and sewerage system etc will have to be integrated through the use of geospatial technology.
Universal access to electricity and water 24 X 7 will be a given.
The municipal offices will have to be fully automated so that citizens have the ability to seek and the municipal offices the ability to deliver services in real time, through IT based facilities.
In terms of social infrastructure, good and high quality education, healthcare and entertainment services are essential.
Adoption of energy-efficient and environmentally benign practices in the use of building material, transport system, sewerage and water supply systems, street lighting, air-conditioning systems and energy consumption in buildings will be non-negotiable.
The document also states that a city having a population of up to 40 lakh or more, cities of tourist and religious importance and select cities which have a population of less than 10 lakh and all state and union territory capitals will get an opportunity to nominate a satellite city for the “Smart City” project.
“In Delhi, it is being proposed that DDA will develop a new smart city through the land pooling scheme as a demonstratively and the NDMC area may be considered for demonstrating all the components of smart cities,” the note says.
While a strong citizen participation in decision-making will be crucial for smart cities, a principle of ‘governance by incentives rather than governance by enforcement’ has to be adopted.
A national urbanization policy would be crucial for guiding the national government financial support to smart cities.
The release of concept note is followed by a National Conclave of States and Union Territories, which is being held on Friday, September 12 to invite suggestions on the blue print.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Why Should We Improve Our Eco Living City
City is a place that has a non-agricultural activity with its function as a centre of the
government or social economy based on the service. Megapolitan city like Jakarta contains more
than 8 million people plus civic centre, and create many problem especially in involving the
environment. The problem has to be resolved as soon as possible because it will create positive
impact if we can improve Jakarta’s quality. There are many benefits that we’ll get if Jakarta is
turned into eco living city, so as citizens, we have to aware about our environment. The eco
living city can stimulate the economic growth, attract the investor, and improve health.
First, many tourists will come to eco living city especially in the free trade area. In
Indonesia, some cities like Kuta, Mataram, Yogyakarta, and Bandung are famous for the traveler,
but why don’t they want to visit Jakarta? Based on statistic centre, more than 7.1 million of
tourists visited Indonesia last year, but there were only 200 thousand of them visited Jakarta. If
we could turned the Jakarta into eco living city, Jakarta would be a choice for tourism object and
create new job for all kind of citizens. After increasing the foreign exchange, the economic
growth will increase significantly, and Jakarta will be one of the greatest city models in WTO
(World Tourism Organization). Consequently, eco living city makes the economic growth in
Jakarta better than before.
Second, the eco living city will attract the investor to invest in Jakarta. As we know, the
government budget for developing Jakarta actually is not enough due to many social problems
such as poverty, flood, politic, etc. Based on Department of Public Work data in 2014, there are
more than 71.05% of slum areas and the unused landfills in Jakarta that cannot be controlled
easily. If we turned the master plan based on eco living city, we can easily present to the investor
about our concept, so they can turn the unused landfills and slum areas to be tourism objects,
office center, and property by doing gentrification. The area will be developed by their own
money after the government reaches the agreement for their contract, so the eco living city will

increase the aesthetic value and attract more people to visit Jakarta. If the consumption level
increases, the productivity of the industry in Jakarta will be increased too. Thus, eco living city
will be the smartest solution if the government cannot do an urban renewal.
Third, eco living city is usually use the environmental friendly system. Curitiba, Freiburg,
Adelaide, and Stockholm are the example of cities that providing enough of green area, using the
renewable energy and using hi-tech mass rapid transportation in order to reduce the amount of
pollution. However, Jakarta is still producing more than 150 𝜇𝑔/𝑚2
of air pollution and the
congestion is getting worse too that cause more than 1.2 million of people in Jakarta had the
problem with their lungs in 2015. Actually, if Jakarta can follow these cities, the amount of
pollution and waste will be reduced significantly, so it can improve our life condition and life
expectancy. Therefore, the eco living city will improve the citizen’s health and save more lives.
Now, with Basuki Tjahaja Purnama as a governor, there are many hopes for Jakarta to do
a sustainable development and develop every potential system to become the eco living city. I
hope Jakarta can be better than before, so all of us will have the better life quality soon. That’s
all of my speech, but before I finish it, there is a last word. When we heal the earth, we heal
ourselves. Let’s show to the world, that Jakarta is revered by the whole world! Thank you very
much for your attention.
