The myth is about the nymph Echo who is punished by Hera for distracting her from Zeus' affairs. As part of her punishment, Echo can only repeat the last words of others and can no longer speak for herself. Echo falls in love with the handsome Narcissus but is unable to express her feelings due to Hera's curse. When Narcissus rejects her, Echo wastes away from grief until only her voice remains.
