Early Stage Exploration
If you just have an idea or want information on what it takes to launch a business,
build a prototype of a new product or technology, or get involved in one or more
of the e-Center’s activities, you’re welcome. It’s easy to set up an appointment
with one of our staff or mentors — just to talk.
Coaching and Mentoring
As a student entrepreneur, you’ll receive one-on-one coaching and mentoring
from local business leaders and JWU alumni from across the country. Many are
happy to share their experiences and help you succeed. To date, our alumni have
spent hundreds of hours coaching and mentoring students at the e-Center.
• successful JWU alumni who share
their entrepreneurial journeys
• attorneys who provide information on
the types of business entities you can
form and how to protect your ideas
and your business
• marketing experts who can show you
how to reach potential customers or
users
• CPAs who can talk with you about
the importance of understanding the
financial side of starting a business
WE MENTOR
SUCCESS.
Get the support you need to develop your idea and
business plan.
e-Bootcamp
Every term, the e-Center offers a four-hour entrepreneurial orientation/bootcamp
where you can learn from
Guest Speaker Series
Each year, our lineup of entrepreneurs and business speakers is extraordinary.
Some speaking events are formal and attended by hundreds of students, while
others are small, more intimate sessions focused on specific topics of interest for
entrepreneurs.
Special Ad Hoc Events
Occasionally the e-Center hosts special events featuring presentations and panel
discussions with successful entrepreneurs in a particular discipline, profession or
market, such as baking and pastry arts, technology or fashion.
e-Center Internship
Earn academic credits toward your degree by interning at the e-Center to work
on your own business. That’s right, you can earn 4.5, 9.0 or 13.5 credits while you
build your own business. Most students who are earning academic credit at the
e-Center are also Venture Accelerator entrepreneurs.
• a customized 11-week progression
• ongoing coaching
• marketing and accounting support
• social media support
• access to a variety of JWU and
community resources to help you
develop your idea or business plan
faster and more effectively in a
creative and supportive environment
Venture Accelerator
The Venture Accelerator is a structured 11-week offering for qualified students.
Each term, students or student teams apply to participate and may receive credit,
depending on their status and availability of internship credits.
If you’re accepted into this highly competitive program, you’ll receive
By reaching certain milestones, you may also be eligible for seed funding to help
you with early stage start-up costs.
READY TO
LAUNCH?
Hone your entrepreneurial abilities and
reach your goals faster at any of these
exciting events.
Fearless Demo Day
As a student entrepreneur, usually during
the spring term, you can participate in a
tradeshow-like event where you can display
or demo your product to potential investors
and the greater JWU and local community.
You can apply to exhibit or just walk through
the exhibit hall to see what your fellow
students have to offer.
JWU’s Annual Sharkfest
Contest
At JWU’s Sharkfest, Wildcat entrepreneurs
pitch their ideas for new businesses,
innovative products or new technologies.
They compete live on-stage for cash awards,
in-kind business services and bragging rights
as a Sharkfest winner. The competition
is open to any JWU student and you can
apply online or attend one of our Sharkfest
auditions normally held during the fall or
winter term.
Venture Launch Parties
We like to celebrate when a Wildcat
entrepreneur launches a business venture,
so when a student is ready to launch, we’re
there to help spread the word by hosting a
fun event at the e-Center. Students, alumni
and members of the community are invited
to attend.
GET FUNDS FOR
YOUR IDEA.
Got a plan that has what it takes? Then secure
capital funding by applying to the Wildcat
Venture Fund.
You can get seed money for your early stage venture through the
Wildcat Venture Fund, made possible by the generosity of local
business leaders, alumni and supporters.
The fund’s advisory panel will review your business plan and may
award loans or grants up to $5,000 based on the viability of your
venture and your readiness as a student entrepreneur.
As a JWU student, Jenna
Barone ’14 started Just Believe
Clothing, an apparel company
with a positive message. Her
current job as executive assistant
to the president of fashion design
company Rachel Roy, is helping her
revamp her brand and make inroads
into the industry.
“The e-Center is the greatest
program,” she says. “It’s a safe
place to test your business. It helps
you determine if you truly can and
want to run you own business —
and helps you realize that you have
what it takes. This has really set me
up for the real world.”
As a senior, Matt Tortora ’15
placed second at Sharkfest
2015 and launched his culinary
technology, “What’s Good.”
Driven by his own frustration with
the difficulty in sourcing locally
grown produce, Tortora’s virtual
marketplace allows chefs to easily
order local produce or seafood
directly from the purveyors —
including farmers and lobster
boat captains. After competing
in Sharkfest and launching his
venture, Tortora has secured
$725,000 of start-up funding.
