Embracing the Virtual Workforce: Remote Companies Hiring Now
Enterprise showcase: Public nominations 2016
1. Adam Ellison
IslandVibe Marketing Consultancy
Startup of theYear
Nominee
I like IslandVibe because it meets the needs of
small business owners who want to grow their
business but just don't know how to or lack the
resources to do so. Often a small business is set
up because someone has a dream or an
aspiration that they want to achieve and I get
to be a part of making that dream become a
reality.

”

3. Aslak Butler
DeckkiTCG
Startup of theYear
Nominee
DeckkiTCG has been very successful in
capturing the products customers want, and
delivering a level of service that maintains
customers - as shown by it's impressive 25%
repeat business statistic.The business model
was derived from a customer experience, and
has resulted in generating healthy profits from
day 1. Across every single day of trading
revenue is in excess of £100 per day, and
doubling this month, and soon to be doubling
again with the introduction of a high-end
product. The owner is learning to be the
ultimate entrepreneurial all-rounder: managing
purchasing, sales, inventory, marketing, r&d,
finance... and every aspect of running a
business.This self-employment was the
platform to build upon years of previous
experience starting from a very young age, to
go out and run a business full-time, with the
support of Academics including mentor Omar
Saleh.

”
4. Aslak Butler
DeckkiTCG
Startup of theYear
Nominee
Running his own business full-time has been a
new and exciting experience for Aslak, it has
been a real learning experience to manage
every aspect of a business from purchasing,
sales, inventory, marketing, customer relations,
finance... and being able to use his market
insight to really appeal to my customers - and
he has been rewarded with strong sales and a
25% repeat business statistic. He is currently
balancing business activities whilst continuing
to grow and development occurs every day.
“
”
5. Aslak Butler
DeckkiTCG
Startup of theYear
Nominee
Aslak is undertaking a self employed placement
and working towards his Work Based Learning
(WBL) unit. His business model is quite unique
and is achieving a steady turnover and profit.
He works on his own from home and manages
purchasing, sales, inventory, marketing,
customer relations and finance. He is a real
credit to the Business Enterprise Development
degree and his business shows real potential for
growth. Working alone can be quite isolating
and a challenge as there is little interaction with
colleagues.Winning this award would help
boost Aslak's confidence and demonstrate to
his peers what can be achieved with dedication
and focus.

6. Aslak Butler
DeckkiTCG
Startup of theYear
Nominee
I admire a number of points regarding this start
up and its student owner: 1.Very deep
understanding of the market, its products &
services. 2.The way Aslak identified a "niche" in
"niche" market & went about testing it &
beginning satisfying single mindedly despite a
few set backs & doubters. 3.The resilience of
the owner in persevering despite major
challenges outside his control in terms
technology availability. 4.The way the
company decided to segment the market into
low, medium & high value products & services
and start up with addressing the first & slowly
moving up the ladder building a healthy
portfolio. This is still at its infancy & hence I
cannot claim it to be a success in
implementation but the thinking behind it is
reasonably sound & bodes well.

7. Aslak Butler
DeckkiTCG
Startup of theYear
Nominee
The Director has used his business knowledge to work in a
structured way to identify the market and the customer base and
developed a product and a trading model that accesses that
market effectively and provides a range of products that the
market wants. He has also used his business knowledge to
develop a clear business plan based on ten years of customer
experience and achieved daily trading revenue of more than
£100/day. He focuses on a high level of customer service with a
return customer currently at 1 in 4, free postage within the UK
and a generous 30-day return policy with currently no products
returned.Aslack is using one of his final year units (Work-based-
learning) to access additional expertise from his mentor and
supervisor to focus on an innovative marketing plan. This will
develop communication with customers using digital and social
media, plan to have a presence at local and national card
tournaments and through this increase direct interaction with
customer. I also admire his focus on the future. He is expanding
into a second card game (Pokémon) with the aim of increasing
sales by 200% with the introduction of a mid-range and highly
lucrative high-end product. He is enthusiastic, hard-working,
knowledgeable and he has researched this market diligently and
identified that the potential for growth is vast, and that Deckki
has the resources and capabilities to become a major player in
this multi-billion dollar industry - which is exclusive to those
within it.

could help so many families, the children are
the future and they deserve a balanced diet so
they can keep their weight at a healthy level
(this in turn helps prevent
bullying/lethargy/improve concentration) and
skin, eyes and mood just from eating less junk
and pop. I am a healthy eater and have found
so many amazing foods/meals at a reasonable
cost. It has helped me get fitter, be in better
mood and reduce bloating and lethargy.

10. Darrel Chang

Nominee
This business startup is particularly enterprising
of this Portsmouth Business School (20 year

sales and accounting which is particularly
impressive when he represents the University

13. Howard Wimshurst
Animator Guild
Startup of theYear
Nominee
Animator Guild has been a passion project of mine since
starting in 2015. Drawing on my experience in freelance
animation, I broadcast informative videos which inspire
and teach the new generation of entertainers. People
are usually surprised when they discover that I have
created a small business during my first year of
university at age 20. Managing it on the side of a busy
course schedule has been difficult but highly rewarding.
For example, I have now been invited to give lectures
and guest seminars atTeTao Group Master'sAcademy in
China as well as Rutgers-Camden University in
Philadelphia. Animator Guild is just beginning to
develop in capital. I see great potential for scale-able
growth by outsourcing tasks to other like-minded
experts. This is where the prizes would be of pivotal help
to my business. With consultation I can learn the
necessary practical methods to scale up the business
and thrive in the internet arts industry. The quest of
Animator Guild does not stop here. I dream of building a

16. Karl Peter Edward Gaskell
Notnormalevents ltd
Startup of theYear
Nominee
Karl is obsessed with success. He is possibly the
most motivated work colleague I've had the
pleasure to work with. Not only has he made a
success of his events company from literally
nothing, but he has recently opened an army
supply store using his experiences from the
military. Along side this Karl has completed a
work based degree, a teaching qualification
and purchased his third property of his property
portfolio. All completed whilst maintaining full
time employment as an engineering instructor
at the DefenceTechnical College. Bearing in
mind he has accomplished the majority of this
within the last 18 months and is only 29. I
believe he is an excellent candidate for the
Entrepreneurial Spirit award 2016.
“
”
17. Karl Peter Edward Gaskell
Notnormalevents ltd
Startup of theYear
Nominee
Karl has had an awful lot to deal with over the
past couple of years. Including moving house
whilst still holding down his previous properties
for the purpose of renting it out. University
report submissions requiring a lot of research in
a short period of time, completing a teaching
qualification, made moves towards starting an
Army supply store, which is due to open
imminently and the events company business
startup mentioned for this nomination. All of
this as well as being capable of maintaining his
full time employment. These are the reasons
for my nomination.

recently put SEIS and EIS application in
preparation towards Demo day in March where
over 400 London investors will be attendance.

20. Leonora Asomanin
La Mo Designs
Startup of theYear
Nominee
Since graduating from the University of Portsmouth I have started
developing my own womenwear fashion & accessories business.
Shortly after University, I was invited to showcase my S/S 15
collection during London FashionWeek. Since then I have
successfully exhibited at the Fashion Designers and Craft Makers
event, entered the FDCYoung DesignerAward 2015, undertook the
role of headline designer in a charity fashion show as well as
international designer at Cairo CoutureCollections. In addition to
this my work has been featured in various media outlets including an
advert in Red Magazine.
I have already been contacted by a manufacturing company and we
are in discussions regarding the production of a variety of scarf
designs which will be made from luxurious fabrics such as silks,
cashmere and Egyptian cotton. The company has previously worked
with leading high-end and high street brands. Besides working on
my business plan I have joined BoBo D2C which is an apparel crowd
funding platform. BoBo wants to give credit where it is due by
helping independent designers make their mark on the industry.
Starting my own business is the right choice for me as I prefer to
have freedom when designing and I have always imaged having my
own band rather than working for a fashion company. My
achievements so far demonstrate my enthusiasm to develop La Mo
Designs into a renowned womenwear fashion brand.

21. MingWu
UU-U Design
Startup of theYear
Nominee
Challenges are what makes a startup succeed in
small ways, UU-U had many challenges to start with
and many solutions made on the way. From lack of
experience which ultimately had a price tag
attached, which resulted in having to pause the
project for more than half a year. Not having funds
to accelerate development times.Trying to do too
much with one person. Relying on just yourself to
get everything done. But these are lesson that are
so valuable, the solutions that was deployed with
some what innovative and on trend to what others
had started to do around the world. Creating
products is a hard and expensive route, but doing it,
the insight gained from the processes, the
businesses, all can be used to in all sorts of areas.
Which is why I chose to start collaborating with
other students' startup in ways that could
potentially help them expand. Because we're the
next generation that could potentially create the
next wave of innovation.

27. Adam Ellison
Student Entrepreneurial
SpiritNominee
AsAdam’sWife, I get to see all the behind the
scenes work that Adam does, I’ve never met
anyone so passionate and as hard working as he
is, I’ve watched him do twelve hour days all
week and not lose any momentum. ButAdam
also as a great quality that all entrepreneurs
need and that is the ability to not give up and
keep going when things get hard. I’ve watched
Adam fight anxiety and deal with very personal
issues that would have otherwise held him back
in various business situations such as giving
presentations and meeting new clients. I have
no doubt that his business will be successful,
because he is willing to work so hard and
overcome whatever challenges stand in his way.
“
”
28. Adam Ellison
Student Entrepreneurial
SpiritNominee
Adam has the mindset and attitude to seek change. He
is innovative and continually strives to improve his
service offering. He set up with no capital, and cold
called a few prospects, using his sales skills to persuade
his clients to utilize his service. He has had the
presence to learn new skill-sets to meet the demands
of his clients, and he offers a professional approach to
his business clients which is unsurpassed by many large
professional organizations. Although he knew only a
little about web site creation, he was able to construct
a web site for us, and is in the process of constructing
another web-commerce site for us, which is
completely outside the scope of his original offering,
which was to provide us with low cost marketing
strategies. Adam offered to manage our social media
and he does so quite effectively, and he has found the
tools to automate the necessary functions. He is very
adaptable and can quickly find solutions to effect
meaningful change in the business.

34. Howard Wimshurst
Student Entrepreneurial
SpiritNominee
Howard is 21 years old, studying BA animation in his first year at
Portsmouth University. Howard has transformed his passion for
hand drawn animation into a multitude of experimental businesses
ventures. To begin with, Howard formed his own highly successful
freelance enterprise (http://www.howardwimshurst.com/) upon
graduating Sixth Form College. The profit generated from this has
funded his first year of university and enabled him to travel to
animation events in Los Angeles, Philadelphia and London. He has
created animation and illustration work for numerous high-profile
clients including Cancer Research UK, Crosswinds, Studio PG,
Immortal Studios and Medtech & Pharma. Howard is also the
founder of animatorguild.com; a rapidly growing educational
website dedicated to teaching the art of 2d animation. In its first
official year, Animator Guild has produced over 50 educational
tutorials and established a worldwide community of over 6000 loyal

Howard is in the process of uniting his fellow animation colleagues
into a syndicate production house named "Just aTree Studio".The
aim of this studio will be to create animated awareness campaigns
for charities such as Amnesty International and WWF. What is
strikingly impressive about Howard's ventures is that he has had no
formal education in business or marketing. Even animation (up until
recently) had been self-taught from a young age. His position in the
internet animations industry is a testament to Howard's
resourcefulness and optimism.

population and launched the society with taster

of the society and, since then, it has proved so
popular it has diversified into three separate classes
that are offered at different ability levels. They
performed for the opening of the NewTheatre

42. Sam Ahmed
Student Entrepreneurial
SpiritNominee
My entire life I have felt the need to give and improve lives
wherever I went (volunteering a year at a youth center in Holland,
and raising over £13k for various charities in the UK, among other
activities) because I was blessed with so many opportunities I let
go to waste. Not until college did I realise my potential and this is
where I started to focus on better the world through business. I
moved to Egypt for 2 years to finish college. Coincendentially the
Egyptian Revolution kicked off 2 months after I moved over.
Finding myself in political turmoil further strengthened my beliefs
towards global sustainability and human development.Today I try
to focus on sustainability and spreading a positive message
wherever I go, encouraging others to achieve their potential
which is going to waste. Having been so lucky to attend private
schooling and being well travelled, I realised that there are people
who weren't afforded these opportunities but still succeeded
simply by their blood sweat and tears. With this understanding I
have started a business by the name of SCHOOL OF ZEN, an
apparel company aiming to donate half the profits to
empowering children in developing countries through education
to give them the tools to shape their own future. I have started
this project a little over 2 months ago and the messages I received
from family, friends and even strangers are incredible.Telling me
how my enthusiasm for life and sustainability inspires them to do
better however little their action is. But what they do not
understand, it's their word of their encouragement that infact
inspire me. In regards to my business' progress, I will commence
trading pending the sampling of a product line (2-3 weeks), and
looking into charities and orphanages needing school equipment
and educational support.Well that's me and my story, and I look
forward to hearing other peoples stories.

44. Xenios Charalambous
Student Entrepreneurial
SpiritNominee
I would like to nominate Xenios Charalambous for being a person that
makes a huge impact on other people life's and myself too. Xenios
Charalambous is known as the guy who managed to quit video games
addiction and now become one of the biggest names in the fitness
industry, having more than 160,000 followers on social media and more
than 3 million views on youtube. He appeared in multiple fitness
magazines, advertising campaigns andTV shows. Xenios studies
computer networks with me, owns two businesses and represents the
leading supplement brand in Europe, Sci-Mx Nutrition. Xenios can
stand out from everybody else from his endless vision and positive
energy. Having a conversation or watching a youtube video of Xenios
you can clearly see the passion and authenticity of what he stands for.
It’s astounding to think that six years ago people used to make fun of
him for his appearances on social media and trying to bring him down
in a negative way to make him stop following his passion. Now he is a
professional athlete, studies at the University of Portsmouth, owns two
businesses and he is an Internet celebrity who has his sights set to be
one of the best in the world.Xenios is an amazing example of what is
possible when you have the drive, will, and determination to treat
yourself right and aspire to become everything you want to be.With
everything he has accomplished, he’s still a young kid. If there’s one
thing we can learn from Xenios, it’s that you should never sell yourself
short. Keep striving. It may be tough, but you’ll get there if you want it
bad enough. I will post below Xenios social media and businesses.

45. Alex Counsell
Staff Entrepreneurial Spirit
Nominee
Alex has consistently developed relationships and
new project ideas that have led to national and
international collaborations. His work in the area
of motion capture has been innovative and
ground breaking, but he has expanded his skillset
to take this beyond the traditional academic
applications and has instead focused on building
valuable commercial relationships.The projects
he has instigated have included consultancy work
in Norway, management of a unique training
course for actors and are set to expand into
digital archiving and heritage. Alex is well
regarded across the industry and this is purely a
result of his hard work in targeting applied
outcomes to his knowledge of motion capture
technology. We in CCI are certain that this
positive trend will continue in the months to
come and that we will continue to see positive
outcomes and future opportunities from his hard
work.

to come along and talk through business ideas,
concerns and problems in a relaxed and informal
setting, giving them an environment they can feel
comfortable in.Amy has driven every success of the
Female Entrepreneurs Network since its launch in
November 2014. She has single handedly managed to
unite female entrepreneurs across Portsmouth

Portsmouth. Amy has excelled in her development of
the network and it is testament to the passion she

Begona has led the MA inTranslation into the real world by
strengthening the focus on links with the profession and the Institute of

department to become involved in entrepreneurial thinking and to build
up the course reputation by holding sessions on entrepreneurial skills
and related professional activities for our students and the public. We
host professional events regularly for theTranslation and Interpreting
sector. We are working on deals with providers of leading professional
tools for our students in order to prepare them for the marketplace.
Entrepreneurial teaching Last summer, after some negotiations,Wessex
translations agreed to collaborate with Begoña and the translation team
in SLAS to enhance enterprise skills in the final year translation unit. The
idea was to run a pilot where undergraduate students would take on the
different team roles of a translation company in class. Two of our
alumni, working currently as project manager and in-house translator
respectively came to give lectures to our final year students in the
autumn spring in preparation for this term where we have been running
the translation company simulation pilot following their advice and
expertise.
This follows on the success of the Professional Aspects ofTranslation
Unit on the MA inTranslation created last year (developed by Begoña
Rodríguez and Sarah Griffin-Mason). Expert professional speakers
continue to come and give talks to our UG and PG students. As part of
this strand, Sarah and Begoña spoke with local teachers about the

51. Dan McCabe
Staff Entrepreneurial Spirit
Nominee
I nominated Dan last year and he was placed runner-up for the Staff
EntrepreneurialSpirit award in 2015, I would like to nominate him again
as his work has continued to be a fantastic contribution both to our
course and to the University. Dan demonstrates entrepreneurial spirit as
coordinator of a level 5 unit titled Professional Practice: Live Design
Brief.Within this unit he asks students to respond to real world briefs
and competitions, and encourages them to externalise their work and
network with clients. He also liaises with several awards schemes and
seeks out live projects with external organisations. For this nomination I
would like to highlight the extent to which he continues to champion
professional practice and entrepreneurial activity on our BA(Hons)
Graphic Design course, both within the context of the Live Brief unit and
beyond.Since the awards last year, the Live Brief unit has continued to
enjoy a multitude of student successes, many of which can be read
about on the unitTumblr blog:
http://portsmouthgraphicdesignyr2.tumblr.com. Four of the Level 5
students on this unit won awards at theYCN international student
competition in September 2015 (double the previous year):
internationally/).
This is an outstanding achievement given that they are in competition
with mostly Level 6 and post-graduate students from other institutions.
Two of the four students also won their categories outright, and the 4
commendations put us in the top 8 institutions for this scheme. As a
result of this success, these students were able to attend an awards
ceremony in London and network with industry contacts. They will also
be featured in theYCN awards annual 2016.

52. Dan McCabe
Staff Entrepreneurial Spirit
Nominee
He feels that it is important to encourage second years to compete at
this level as it helps them to develop core professional practice skills. We
believe that this gives them the edge over other students at other
institutions, especially when applying for work experience, internships
and freelance work between the 2nd and 3rd years of study.Within the
same unit, we also had 3 students win awards for a collaborative project
he set up with a design agency in Bristol in November 2015;
http://portsmouthgraphicdesign.tumblr.com. He had networked with
this agency, aptly called ‘the Collaborators’, over a year ago with a view
to setting up a live brief. It was a fantastic experience for all involved,
and they will now be looking to employ one of our students at the end of
year Portsmouth Summer show.
Further to these successes, four Level 5 students were short-listed in an
International competition called 'Poster forTomorrow' in December
2015; http://creativespace.cci.port.ac.uk/2016/01/08/graphic-design-
students-short-listed-in-poster-for-tomorrow-competition/.One of the
students was placed in the top 100 entries and his work is now being
exhibited in cities around the world. This competition aligns perfectly
with the ethos of social awareness and responsibility that underpins our
course, and I am incredibly proud that our University is now linked to
such an event.
