Along with the esophagus and the stomach, the colon is one of the
most prominent organs of the digestive system, and the foods we eat
play a significant role in our overall colon health. When trying to
make colon-healthy diet choices, here are two important concepts to
consider.
The American Cancer Society says that people are 15 to 20 percent
more likely to get colon cancer if they eat increased amounts of red
meat and other processed meats, such as sausages and hot dogs
on a daily basis.

3.  In order to decrease this risk and keep the colon more
healthy, it’s better to choose lean meats such as
chicken and fish and avoid processed meats, which
often contain preservatives and other chemicals that
have been linked to colon cancer.
When choosing cooking oils and other fats, it’s
important to know the difference between good fats
and bad fats. Research indicates that unhealthy
saturated fats and trans fats, often found in red meat
and butter, can increase the risk of developing colon
cancer. Foods that contain unsaturated fat, like olive
oil, salmon, and walnuts, however, may help lower the
risk of colon cancer by up to 12 percent.
