A local environmental movement called Save The Great South Bay formed in 2012 at a high school reunion in Sayville, New York. Through social media like Facebook and their website, the group grew rapidly to over 3,600 likes on their Facebook page and 550 members in their Facebook group by May 2013. Their goal is to educate the local community about science related to the bay by bringing together groups like The Nature Conservancy, local marine biologists, and environmental organizations.
