Igneous rocks form from cooling magma or lava, with examples being granite, pumice, obsidian and basalt. Sedimentary rocks form from compressed and cemented sediments derived from weathered rock, such as sandstone, limestone, shale and conglomerate. Metamorphic rocks change over time under intense heat and pressure from their original igneous or sedimentary state, becoming harder with examples including quartzite, marble and slate. Rocks experience different types of stress including compression, tension and shearing which change their shape and occur at convergent, divergent and transform plate boundaries.
