Take a look around the modern classroom today and you may find a batch of students all learning in a similar way and succeeding. However, look a little deeper and you will find the outliers; students who are either blazing past everyone or struggling to keep up. Today, like never before, we have a better understanding of how these students function, what drives them and how we can assist them.
This workshop focuses on how to both identify your unique learners and design a program to improve their ability to succeed.
We are all too familiar with the diversity problem in the tech industry. Being vocal on issues is important, but to make a difference we must also act. In October, I decided to start Codebar as an attempt to offer free weekly coding workshops to women, LGBT and other underrepresented minorities with the help of the community.
Through my personal experiences and struggles as a developer, I've learned just how important communities and the support they offer are. Things are easier when someone is sitting next to us offering a helping hand or just encouraging us to continue. The talk focuses on Codebar, what this is all about, the vision, and what you can do to help make tech a better and more welcome place.

Being involved in change can be exciting and exhausting and for us to be of service to others, we need to regularly take stock of how WE are and build our resilience.
This 60 min webinar will give you tips and tricks on how you can refresh your energy and passion and build the resilience you need to perform at your best.
As the title suggests, I've been in this business for a while and I learned a few things along the way. Topics include how to work with clients & stakeholders, working in teams, and a few personal lessons which could prove useful for you as well.

3. About this Workshop
• This workshop is an experiment
• The aim is to test my belief that dyslexic / neuro diverse people need to
employ different tactics from non-dyslexic people when planning their
career – Indeed they need to be better at and more proactive.
• To explore the topic I will try to identify some game theory scenarios
which model the career planning process
• I will also want your feed back and ideas

9. My Guesses
• Dyslexics often find it hard to separate work from
rest of life – (Idea of working 5 days a week to live
at weekends hard for dyslexics).
• Dyslexics need to be passionate about their job
work needs to matter. (I have never found it easy
to see it as just a Job but that may be just me).
• Dyslexics spend less than average amount of time
in a job than the neuro-typical average 4-5 years.

24. When recruiting businesses want
Adapted from civil service fair selection training
• People who they are sure can do the job, not always the best person
for the job.
• People who will fit in to teams, and compliment existing skills, rather
than replicate those skills.
• People who are adaptable and flexible. So that the company can mould
employees to fit its requirements, rather than people who have their
way of working and have become rigid.
• Reducing risk is more important than identifying star performers.
• Job specifications and person profiles are designed to identify a cog in
a machine rather than people who will challenge how the machine
works

25. Exercise 5

26. Be aware dyslexia has a dark side from an
employers perspective (and its not only about
reading and writing)
Risks
• Untidy appear disorganised
• Get frustrated doing boring
tasks / get upset when left
out of decision making.
• Talk to too much at
meetings, red herrings, DVD
• Appear nervous not
confident around colleagues
Mitigation
• Work on organisation skills
• Take responsibility for own
wellbeing- don’t unload on
employer
• Be self-aware
• Consider being coached or
mentored.
• Know your subject be ahead of
the game, and keep learning.

30. My Guesses
Things you can do
• Follow your interests- you are
likely to be more successful doing
something you like, or are
passionate about.
• Develop Weapons – You are more
likely to be employed for being
good at something, than for not
having weaknesses.
• Take ownership of your Self
Development and Wellbeing-
Consider -Coaching , mentoring,
and counselling .
Have a method to off-load outside
of work and family.
•
Things to be aware of
• Safe and sensible is dangerous –
Lots of people will be better at
being average than a dyslexic
• Confidence is key – if you are in
the zone and not conscious of
being dyslexic you are likely to be
succeeding.
• Dyslexics can often be found
– At the cutting edge,
– In areas of obscure specialism,
– In industries which have not
been codified.
– Where innovation is at a
premium.

More Dyslexics get job from networking than open application
Dyslexics often get asked to shape their job and develop specialisms
Janet and John go for walk and end up in pub ,
they each take turns to decide to stop at pub or carry on ,
They both know each others preferences very well
They both know that at the final fork Janet will Choose the creative challenge which John thinks is average
So before that john will choose the sensible choice which janet thinks is below average
To stop that happening Janet will choose the moderation which john thinks is seriously poor
So john tends to choose the lady bird which janet hates
To aviod the risk Janet Chooses the Michael Gove which both agree is a pit. So they end up having a row
Both of their favorite pubs are at end of walk , but they are quite competitive
Janet has first choice and does not want to end up at pub john likes more than her
So what happens
