Dyslexia is a language-based learning disability characterized by difficulties with reading, writing, spelling, and pronouncing words. It is more common in boys than girls and those affected are often gifted and creative. While there is no known cause of dyslexia, it is genetic and linked to chromosome 2. Students with dyslexia often struggle significantly with basic language skills, have inconsistently test scores, and avoid reading aloud. Support includes Individualized Education Programs, printed notes, one-on-one instruction, and follow ups. The International Dyslexia Association is a national resource for those affected by dyslexia.
