Survival Skills for Teachers—Sandy Dutemple

                            CONTENT:

Testing standards - give direction not how to teach, not only drill
Local curriculum input - benchmarks
Curriculum mapping - backward design
Pacing guides - keep on task
Assessment points - how are we doing?
Cross curricular intersections/connections - team mates
Daily planning - the success driver for all

                   CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT/ORGANIZATION

Routines and procedures:
       Warm up - quick and to the point
       Objective(s) for the day
       Due dates - long and short term
       Late work
       Labeling of lessons/papers
       Homework policy - use of calendar or agenda book
       Movement in classroom - breaks
       Where to place or find things
Locations of learning tools and absence “stuff”
Conduct expectations and consequences - clear, concise, corrective not punitive
Lesson organization
       Launch and catch‘em
       Direct instruction
       Activity
       Wrap up
       15-20 minute segments (unless very involved)

                                 TEAM/DEPARTMENT

Multiple brains are better than one - USUALLY
Support and help are available
Focus on kids and their learning
Welcome parents early - many feel school is the enemy
Parent conferences - must be positive, not a ganging up; involve kids
Share planning issues - the wheel has been invented
Share responsibilities - including duties
If possible, leave more at school and take less home
Meetings with a purpose and an agenda
Good planning is the key to success for you and the kids.
BELIEFS DRIVE THE TASKS:

                            Why Did You Become a Teacher?

Never do anything a kid can do for you
Smile and encourage realistically - praise progress, support slippage and expect it
Manipulatives, real life contacts, role-playing
Re-teach and re-test - use peer tutors
Toss lifesavers or Teddy grahams
Prevent and avoid failures - try a “no zero” policy
Don’t take things personally - kids’ sense of humor and lack of social skills often cause
inappropriate responses - they are learning to be more grown up
Laugh with kids or at yourself - every 10 minutes
When things get bad - shut the door and TEACH!!!

When you become exhausted and just don’t know how to go on,
REFRESH YOURSELF AND MOVE ON. Continuing to overwork and adding more stress
will not help you or your students.

Survival Skills for Middle School Teachers

Survival Skills for Teachers—Sandy Dutemple CONTENT: Testing standards - give direction not how to teach, not only drill Local curriculum input - benchmarks Curriculum mapping - backward design Pacing guides - keep on task Assessment points - how are we doing? Cross curricular intersections/connections - team mates Daily planning - the success driver for all CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT/ORGANIZATION Routines and procedures: Warm up - quick and to the point Objective(s) for the day Due dates - long and short term Late work Labeling of lessons/papers Homework policy - use of calendar or agenda book Movement in classroom - breaks Where to place or find things Locations of learning tools and absence “stuff” Conduct expectations and consequences - clear, concise, corrective not punitive Lesson organization Launch and catch‘em Direct instruction Activity Wrap up 15-20 minute segments (unless very involved) TEAM/DEPARTMENT Multiple brains are better than one - USUALLY Support and help are available Focus on kids and their learning Welcome parents early - many feel school is the enemy Parent conferences - must be positive, not a ganging up; involve kids Share planning issues - the wheel has been invented Share responsibilities - including duties If possible, leave more at school and take less home Meetings with a purpose and an agenda Good planning is the key to success for you and the kids.
  • 2. BELIEFS DRIVE THE TASKS: Why Did You Become a Teacher? Never do anything a kid can do for you Smile and encourage realistically - praise progress, support slippage and expect it Manipulatives, real life contacts, role-playing Re-teach and re-test - use peer tutors Toss lifesavers or Teddy grahams Prevent and avoid failures - try a “no zero” policy Don’t take things personally - kids’ sense of humor and lack of social skills often cause inappropriate responses - they are learning to be more grown up Laugh with kids or at yourself - every 10 minutes When things get bad - shut the door and TEACH!!! When you become exhausted and just don’t know how to go on, REFRESH YOURSELF AND MOVE ON. Continuing to overwork and adding more stress will not help you or your students.
