As a classroom teacher, team leader, college professor and supervisor of student teachers, it became apparent that multiple factors must be managed to enable student and teacher successes in the classroom daily. After reflecting on these, and having input from pre-service and in-service teachers, it seemed that these factors when managed well promoted success for all each day. These are not mind-boggling, but really work when managed.

Never do anything a kid can do for you Smile and encourage realistically - praise progress, support slippage and expect it Manipulatives, real life contacts, role-playing Re-teach and re-test - use peer tutors Toss lifesavers or Teddy grahams Prevent and avoid failures - try a “no zero” policy Don’t take things personally - kids’ sense of humor and lack of social skills often cause inappropriate responses - they are learning to be more grown up Laugh with kids or at yourself - every 10 minutes When things get bad - shut the door and TEACH!!! When you become exhausted and just don’t know how to go on, REFRESH YOURSELF AND MOVE ON. Continuing to overwork and adding more stress will not help you or your students.
