Due Date: Sunday at 11:59 pm of Unit 7
Points: 10
Overview:
This project consists of two parts: a written outline and a presentation video. You will
develop a detailed outline in preparation for your speech, then present an informative
speech on the topic of your choice. Your speech will be submitted through the Bongo
platform in Mindtap. The outline for your speech is due in Unit 5 and the video speech
presentation is due in Unit 7.
Instructions:
The intent/focus of your speech should be to inform the audience on a topic of your
choosing. Keep in mind and incorporate all lectures/activities leading up to the
presentation. Your presentation must be supported by a minimum of three credible
sources - this excludes personal experience. You will utilize the Bongo platform in
Mindtap to record your video.
The length of the speech should be 5 minutes and include:
1. A clear visual aid
2. An attention getter
3. A thesis
4. A preview of main points
5. In speech citations of supporting materials (Say them out loud during your
speech)
6. A summary of points in the conclusion
7. A memorable ending
8. A works cited page
Optional: If you choose to, you can use a PowerPoint presentation along with your
speech (5 slide limit). Use the following tutorial to help you combine your video with
your PowerPoint presentation using a free app called Bandicam.
MindTap Tools:
• You will record and save your speech in Bongo Platform in MindTap:
o Click on the MindTap Content folder link in the Unit.

o Choose “Present Your Informative Speech” and record your speech.
o Return to Unit 7 in Blackboard, click on the assignment, and type ”Done”
in the box for it to be graded.
Tips and Guidelines:
• Pay attention to your presentation style. Be sure to speak loudly and clearly so
the audience can hear you.
• Record your video in a small, quiet space with plenty of light and be sure there is
no audio feedback on the recording.
• Position yourself in the center of the frame so your facial expressions and other
body language are in clear view.
• Dress appropriately for speaking in front of your peers.
• Pay attention to the time requirements and stay within the limits.
• Utilize the practice assignment in unit 6 to prepare for your presentation.
Requirements:
• Speak clearly and concisely.

In creating a presentation it is important to have credibility so that the
audience will find that you are an authority on a topic.
You get to be an authority by learning about a topic through research. A
student learning objective for this course is to demonstrate the ability to use
search and the Internet to find excellent resources on a particular topic. A
portion of your presentation grade will depend on what you can show you
used for research on your topic and how you discuss what was learned
from the research citations.
A good presenter needs to entertain and inform the audience.
The way the presentation is crafted, how much is revealed in bullets versus
how much the author discusses, often determines how captive the
audience will be. Placing text in a slide and then reading the slide is not
entertaining to most audiences. So find a good summary for each slide,
then have the speaker notes to provide the details you plan to cover. DO
NOT READ your speaker notes!
In order to inform your audience you need to have credible information.
Reciting common topic knowledge will fail to entertain and certainly not be
informative. Try to find a twist on the topic. Find some angle of thinking
about it. For example, did an event occur that has something to do with
the topic. Why is the event important? What does it show about the topic?
As you work to build up the information for your topic, ask yourself some
questions as you do the research.
Who/what explained the topic well? What did it contribute?
Was the citation more of an introduction to the topic or detail?
What details stood out in the citation?
What did you learn from the citation?
What subtopic did I discover as a result of the search?

Out of the minimum total number of references required, each presentation
must have 4 required elements for References:
Book

Periodical (newspaper or magazine)

Recall that MLA form has specific instructions for each type of reference.
Please consider the NCLive location for references. It has an excellent
search tool, which can be used to refine searches.

Please note. The following types of publication are NOT considered
academically rigorous when used for proof of a finding. Some professors
do not consider Wikipedia a good source. (I do, but not for every entry, only
for 1 topic/subtopic item.)
While there may be truth and accuracy in the citation, for the most part, to
be considered as an authority on the topic, some kind of refereed journal or
other specific publication that has exacting standards is required. That does
not mean that some useful information, along with keywords that can help
in search, cannot be found from the sources listed below ...

Assignment Guidelines/Instructions
1. GOAL OF SPEECH: The goal of this assignment is to move the audience to take action
to stop/decrease a specific global issue happening within their nation, state, local
areas/organizations – not just think differently, but do something specific. You will use
the same global issue from your Informative Speech.
2. TOPIC CHOICE: First, you chose the topic from the list provided for your Informative
Speech. If you received approval and completed the Informative Preparation Outline,
PowerPoint, and Delivery you are ready to create the Persuasive Speech. REMEMBER:
You use the same topic for both your informative and persuasive speeches: BUT
the speeches are wholly different! Work now to choose one side and persuade the
audience of its value and validity to them. ALSO REMEMBER, STUDENTS
CANNOT PRESENT THE SAME TOPIC!!!
3. SPEECH ORGANIZATION OR PATTERN OF DELIVERY: The organization of a
speech and its contents follow certain patterns provided in your textbook. For the
Persuasive Speech your speech organization format MUST follow Monroe’s Motivated
Sequence. See Chapter 6 in the textbook for more information.
An example of the Persuasive Speech Preparation Outline with guidelines and a sample
to follow with these instructions is located at the bottom of this document. NOTE: Items
in RED are instructions, please do not retype the words in red as they are there just to
help you understand the format. Be sure to answer the questions in BLUE for each
main point.
Please note that you MUST answer the four objectives of Monroe’s Motivated
Sequence so follow the guidelines provided or your grade will suffer! Do not make
this assignment harder than what it is by trying to create more work than is necessary.
4. VISUAL AID: A PowerPoint must be created as a visual aid and shown when you
present your speech. This PowerPoint is required and will be evaluated on its design
and integration into the speech. Speech delivery without a PowerPoint will result in a
10% points penalty from delivery points. You may use other visual aids as you desire.
5. RESEARCH & APA CITATION: At least one source must be orally cited for each main
point during your speech (minimum of 4, best is 6).
REMEMBER, You MUST cite at least one source during each of your main points - no
less than 4 sources in total - in support of your points (ex. according to..., as stated in...,
said by...). This means that they must be verbalized, and not just referenced at the
end… so integrate your sources!!! ***** Also note, the speech is not solely your opinion,
other academically credible sources are needed. Galileo is recommended or Google
Scholar.

Robert Thomas:
Professor and class,
The best visual presentation I have ever seen was a demonstration on the necessity of social media in non-profit organizations. This was a power point presentation, but the presenter only used that program to elaborate what he was discussing and also provide levity to the presentation. He was animated, witty, and right on topic.
The worse presentation I have seen was a presenter who just basically read the power point presentation right off of the screen. He was monotone and completely uninteresting. I got absolutely nothing out of the presentation. It would have been better just to read a pamphlet on the subject.
To address the second segment, I believe that a program like power point needs to compliment the presentation. The problem is that many presenters rely on power point for the entire presentation. This is not enough. The visual presentation needs to be stunning and colorful. It needs to compliment the presenter.
The presenter needs to be interesting and exciting. He needs to interact with his audience. Body language is very important for the presenter. He needs to be quirky and humorous and one with the audience. When he refers to the visual, it should be to compliment his talk.

Definition: A presentation is the process of presenting a topic to an audience. It is typically a
demonstration, introduction, lecture, or speech meant to inform, persuade, inspire, motivate, or to
build good will or to present a new idea or product.
Planning Your Presentation
Preparing a presentation can be an overwhelming experience if you allow it to be one. The
strategies and steps below are provided to help you break down what you might view as a large
job into smaller, more manageable tasks.
Step 1: Analyze your audience
The first step in preparing a presentation is to learn more about the audience to whom you'll be
speaking. It's a good idea to obtain some information on the backgrounds, values, and interests of
your audience so that you understand what the audience members might expect from your
presentation.
Step 2: Select a topic
Next, if possible select a topic that is of interest to the audience and to you. It will be much easier
to deliver a presentation that the audience finds relevant, and more enjoyable to research a topic
that is of interest to you.
Sample Outline FormatNote The outline you submit should .docxanhlodge
Sample Outline Format
Note: The outline you submit should be one MS Word document inclusive of the outline, references page and description of visuals.
Speech Title: A creative title will add to audience interest.
General Purpose: Is it to inform? To persuade? To entertain? To mark a special occasion?
Specific Purpose: A specific statement of what you expect to accomplish with your speech - your desired outcome.
Introduction: Grabs the attention of the audience, presents a topic of the speech and tells the audience the major points of your speech.
A. Attention Getter: grab the attention of the audience- ideas include:
Use a famous quotation; tell a story, real or hypothetical; pose questions, rhetorical or directed; make a startling statement; use suspense; make a personal reference; use humor
B. Thesis Statement: The thesis is a single sentence that summarizes your message. Every other part of your speech should support your thesis statement.
Credibility: Somewhere early in the presentation, typically after the thesis statement, but before the preview statement, it will be important to establish credibility as a speaker.
Credibility can be established through reference to your own expertise on the topic and/or through making verbal reference to the sources of your support. This persuades the audience that you are "trustworthy" enough to speak about the subject, which is critical to your success.
You should continue to make references to your credibility throughout the speech to maintain that perception, but it is most important near the start. Body: Contains the main points of your speech and is where you focus on the details; here your intent is to provide all the necessary evidence to explain and support your points.
Preview Statement: Here you preview your main points, which should be stated using parallel language.
Tie to the audience: Somewhere early in the presentation, typically after the preview statement, but before the first main point, it will be important to tie the topic to the audience. Why should they be interested in what you have to say? Why is it important to them?
You should continue to tie the material to your audience throughout the presentation to maintain the importance of the material, but it is most important near the start.
A. Main Point #1: You should have between 2 and 5 main points in the body of your speech, which will be supported by the subordinate points below.
1. The bulk of your speech will be support.
a. Support should be outlined following the conventions of outlining
b. Your outline should be of sufficient detail
2. The number of support points and sub-points in your outline will vary.
a. Be sure to read the text about the different types of outlines.
b. It is important that you use subordination to effectively demonstrate relationships between ideas.
B. Main Point #2
Supporting materials illustrate the main points by clarifying, elaborating and verifying.

Section C
Please write your essay in the blue book.
Write an informal narrative about "some" composing process of yours. Essentially, you will write a Reflective Self-Evaluation of yourself as a college writer. What exactly does that mean? It requires you to:
a. look back over a recently completed process
b. think reflectively about that process
c. critically evaluate what went well, what didn’t go well, or what you might have done differently
As the aforementioned examples suggest, reflective writing is writing that describes, explains, interprets, and evaluates any past performance, action, belief, feeling, or experience. To reflect is to turn or look back, to reconsider something in the past from the perspective of the present. So, in your final essay, you will reflect and make an evaluation of your experience in this course.
Remember, reflection involves multiple angles of vision. Just as light waves are thrown or bent back from the surface of a mirror, so, too, reflective writing throws our experience, action, or performance back to us, allowing us to see differently. We view the past from the angle of the present, what was from the angle of what could have been or what might be. Multiplying your angle of vision through reflection often yields new insights and more complicated (complex) understanding of the issue on which you are reflecting.
Professors generally look for four kinds of knowledge in reflective self-evaluation essays: self-knowledge, content knowledge, rhetorical knowledge, and critical knowledge (aka judgment). Following are ideas for each of these types of knowledge, which may be used to generate ideas for your essay. Choose only a few of the questions to respond to, questions that allow you to explain and demonstrate your most important learning for the course.
You may write about your composing process for academic papers or creative genres or a combination of both. Reflect as thoroughly as possible upon your writing process and explain it. Your narrative should include whatever you DO when you write, as well as whatever you DO when you compose. Composing should be understood in the broad sense, i.e. composing goes on in your mind when you are cleaning your refrigerator, mowing your grass, etc. It also occurs when you are researching, taking notes, or procrastinating. In essence you are NEVER NOT composing something. So the key to your reflections is to include everything you do that makes a difference in your writing, from having to use a certain pen, to listening to music or sitting in the library. Both your formal and informal processes impact the way you produce a written work, if you use a formal method of note taking or outlining, if you compose on the computer or with pen and paper explore any and all of these activities that are helpful to you in your process. Explore all possible aspects that apply. This is a useful exercise for now and for you to revisit and revise in the future .

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
