It emphasizes that web content should be perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust for all users, including those with disabilities. The tips include using proper semantics with HTML5 elements and ARIA roles, adding descriptive text alternatives, ensuring sufficient color contrast and font sizes, and enabling keyboard navigation and screen reader support. The overall message is that an accessible web is open and inclusive for everyone.
From jQuery San Diego, held Feb 12-13 2014, my talk on web accessibility for web developers. I cover basic techniques, introduce screen readers and ARIA, and go over testing. The goal is to demystify accessibility so we can weave it in to applications today.

It is one of the most vibrant and connected communities in the technical world. Now is your chance to learn, make new contacts and drive your career forward (the way you always keep telling yourself you will). In this session Mark Broadbent will describe how his professional career at ACME Corp has hit a brick wall, but after discovering a small door behind a filing cabinet, he has managed to climb into the mind of Buck Woody and discover a world of possibilities and opportunity at his disposal. CSS Lessons Learned the Hard Way (Generate Conf)Zoe Gillenwater
Zoe Mickley Gillenwater gave a talk at Generate Conference in London where she shared several mistakes she made while learning CSS flexbox and other techniques. These included misunderstanding how flex-basis works, incorrectly using CSS transforms like rotateX, and making assumptions about screen reader support that caused accessibility issues. She emphasized that vulnerability and sharing mistakes openly can help both oneself and others learn. Making mistakes is a natural part of the learning process, and perfection should not be expected or feared.

Progressive enhancement is still an important approach for building responsive websites and web applications. While JavaScript can now be assumed to be widely available, progressive enhancement avoids single points of failure and improves performance by loading critical content first before non-essential enhancements. The distinction between websites and applications is also blurred, so progressive techniques remain applicable to most digital experiences on the web.

The Big Picture: Responsive Images in Action #scd14Matthias Lau
Although responsive designs are already state-of-the-art in web development the whole trend still is in its infancy. When it comes to images, a lot of responsive websites just load the same big image on every viewport. Because of this, people judge responsive design as being detrimental to performance. New markup elements like <picture> are in development right now but what are the alternatives, what is the best to use right now, and how do they work? I will lead you through the different techniques and polyfills and show you their pros and cons. After this talk you should be able to choose the best fitting responsive image solution for your project.

Progressive Enhancement 2.0 (jQuery Conference SF Bay Area 2011)Nicholas Zakas
In the beginning, progressive enhancement was simple: HTML layered with CSS layered with JavaScript. That worked fine when there were two browsers, but in today's world of multiple devices and multiple browsers, it's time for a progressive enhancement reboot. At the core is the understanding that the web is not print - the same rules don't apply. As developers and consumers we've been fooled into thinking about print paradigms for too long. In this talk, you'll learn just how different the web is and how the evolution of progressive enhancement can lead to better user experiences as well as happier developers and users.

Plugins on OnDemand with Remote Apps - Atlassian Summit 2012 Atlassian
The document discusses how remote apps allow developers to integrate third party applications into Atlassian's OnDemand service. Remote apps use a simple descriptor file to register the app and define things like permissions, pages, and macros. This avoids the complexity of developing plugins and allows apps to be built using any programming language. Examples are provided of how to create a Lucidchart diagramming app using remote apps.
1) Rachel Andrew discusses considerations when choosing tools and frameworks for front-end development projects, emphasizing progressive enhancement and ensuring the core experience works for all.
2) She argues against over-reliance on frameworks, which can mask issues and prevent learning core skills. Frameworks should be used lightly and evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
3) Andrew talks about the importance of standards-based development and contributing to emerging specifications like CSS Grid Layout, rather than depending entirely on pre-processors. Her goal is to encourage continued progress of the open web.
Session 3/8. Priority issues. The Strategic Content Alliance, JISC sponsored workshops on Maximising Online Resource Effectiveness, held on different occasions throughout 2010 and delivered by Netskills.
The document provides an overview of HTML5 and its new features. It begins by explaining that HTML5 is not a programming language and is mainly used to write web pages. It then discusses how browsers have become application platforms, prompting the need to adopt HTML5. The document outlines some of the major new features in HTML5, including semantic elements like header and nav, new input types, geolocation, local storage, offline web applications, and video playback. It also addresses questions around the future of Flash and which companies are pushing adoption of HTML5.

Introduction to Progressive Web ApplicationsChris Love
Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) are websites that utilize modern web features to deliver native app-like experiences to users. The minimum requirements for a PWA are that it is served over HTTPS, includes a web app manifest, and registers a service worker. Service workers allow PWAs to work offline by handling fetch events and caching assets. While adding a PWA to a user's home screen can improve engagement, the true battleground is changing user perception of the capabilities of web apps versus native apps.
The document discusses HTML5 and provides information on its features and uses. It outlines the main components of HTML5 including multimedia, styling, connectivity and more. It provides examples of HTML5 markup for video, semantics, fonts and responsive design. It also discusses the HTML5 standards process and offers resources for learning more about HTML5.
