2. Introduction
A digital ID is a method of securely verifying who we are online in a way that protects our data
and personal information. Driver's licenses, passports, and bank cards are examples of physical
ID credentials that can be used for digital identity. However, it provides individuals with greater
privacy and control over how their information is used and shared, while reducing the hazards
associated with traditional ID cards, such as theft and forgery. Individuals would be able to safely
authenticate their identities while conducting online transactions, similar to how they already
show their ID for verification in many day-to-day activities, but with a higher level of data
protection. It's quick, accelerating both government interactions and corporate transactions. It's
quick, accelerating both government interactions and corporate transactions. It is secure and
safeguards important personal information. It's also convenient, smoothly merging into our daily
life.
Brief overview:
The ‘DigiPass’ app is a blockchain enabled platform for creating a digital ID which could be
later used to obtain Passport and for further procedures. This app creates a public and private key
which will be associated with the login details and certificates the user provides. Once the
in-person verification is completed the details of the user will be sent to the passport office, and
the e-passport once generated will be sent to the app. It could be saved and used for any future
needs like applying for a visa, etc.
Problems identified
· Tedious procedure
One of the main problems identified is the long procedure for passport applying and
verifying. Which involves multiple documentation verification and several personal
verifications such as police verification, etc.
· Risk of theft/Loss
Around 400000 passports were reported to be stolen or lost every year. These passports
may be stolen on black markets, an article from the daily post says. This could be a
potential threat if left untreated.
· Delay in issue
3. Another important issue is the delay in getting a passport, after completing all the
procedures it takes 3 to 4 weeks to receive the passport. This lead time could be affecting
several further processes. In case of emergency this could land in a big trouble
· Further usage
In order to get a visa or other further usage it will be difficult to work with physical
documents.
How does this work:
· Download the app- "DigiPass” on the mobile device.
· The individual is required to create a private key that works in tandem with
the Blockchain.
· Then, they are required to add the necessary documents to get a fresh
passport. (for example documents of proof of age, proof of address, and a
government ID).
· The individual will be given an option to provide the combination for his/her
public key while filling out the form for issuing a passport.
· Once the forms required for the Passport are filled, the individual will be
required to go to the Passport Office once for the physical verification purpose
on the scheduled date and time of the appointment.
· During this physical verification, the documents shared through the public key
will be verified and cross-checked by the officials.
· Once the verification process is complete, the government will issue an
attested Digital ID that will be added as another block of the Individuals
Blockchain. Using biometrics, the Digital ID will be linked to the actual
person and their national identity certificate, i.e, in this case, the Passport.
4. · The document is safely kept and encrypted in individual identity using crypto
(using Blockchain). The government-accredited (attested/certified) document
will be included in the encrypted document (making it very legible).
· Hence, when there is a future requirement for the Passport, it will help them
share the document with just a tap on their phone.
· Furthermore, if an individual needs a visa to travel to an international country,
they can simply use a public key to transmit documents such as their Passport,
proof of age, proof of address, and the country's needed Visa form.
· This can also be used to finish a faster process in immigration, avoiding the
time that is required for checking the authenticity of the Passport. If needed,
the traveler can send their identification in advance of their trip to speed up
the process.
Practical Application:
Scenario: An individual intends to apply for a new passport and travel to Singapore
subsequently.
· The user must first download the software onto his or her mobile device. Once he or she has
downloaded the app, they must upload the relevant documents for the passport application,
such as proof of address, proof of age, and one official ID. After that, he or she must generate
a private key that works in tandem with the Blockchain.
· They then log into the Passport portal and fill out the form. When they are filling out the
forms, they will be given the opportunity to link their public key to the form, and once he or
she grants consent on their phone, they will be able to share those documents with the
officials. After completing the form, he or she will be requested at the Passport Office just
once for physical verification and to double-check all of the papers submitted via the public
key.
5. · The Passport will be added to the individual's Blockchain as a new block once the verification
is done. The passport is government-issued and attested, making it extremely trustworthy.
· The Passport is encrypted and protected in the Blockchain. The biometrics of the individual
will be linked to his or her Passport. As a result, any immigration can obtain the original
Passport with just a fingerprint.
· Say afterwards he or she wishes to visit Singapore on a tourist visa. For the majority of
verifications and visas, a few standard documents are necessary. The original passport, proof
of address, proof of age, bank statement, and other papers may well be required. If he or she
added them when applying for the passport, the information will remain in the Blockchain,
and all they have to do now is grant access to it using a public key.
· As a result, Digital ID and Blockchain make this process simple and paperless in most cases.
Assessing the Social Impact-
We conducted a poll of 50 people using a questionnaire to measure the social impact of our
solution.
Currently, 93% of our responders have a valid Indian passport.
We received a variety of responses when we asked how long it took them to get their passport.
Few respondents received their passports within 1-2 weeks, however the majority of
recipients received their passports within 3-4 weeks on average.
For this process, nearly 49% of respondents had to go through a minimum of two in-person
verifications, and 28% had to go through in-person verification.
A digital passport procedure, according to 89% of respondents, will be more effective than the
traditional procedure.
6. Obtaining a new passport is a time-consuming process. As a result, just about 58% of
respondents were just satisfied with their service, while 42% did not have a pleasant
experience.
Almost 72% of respondents believe that including Digital ID and Blockchain into the process
would improve it.
When asked if they thought blockchain was secure or not, nearly 60% of respondents said it was.
Because blockchain is a new technology, many people are unfamiliar with it. However, 72%
of them feel that by combining Blockchain and Digital ID, we may establish a paperless
visa/immigration procedure.
By 2030, the number of international travellers is expected to double. By 2030, the population is
expected to exceed 1.8 billion, implying that every day, 5 million individuals will traverse
international borders for leisure, business, or other reasons such as visiting friends and
family, in addition to the four times as many visitors who travel domestically.
With the growing number of international passengers, 72% of respondents believe that replacing
physical passport verification with a fingerprint will be effective in every border situation.
We're all aware of the potential for IDs to be misused. Especially in a society where we
overshare data and it all becomes a part of a footprint, which we can't take back once we
share it. To get a better understanding of the issue, we gave the respondents an example. Do
you think your identification cards could be misused by whoever possesses them? Let's say
you Xerox it and they take possession of it and misuse it. 48%of respondents were afraid this
might happen in the future, and 37% believed it was likely to happen. As a result, nearly 75%
of them feel that Blockchain can fix this problem by encrypting and safeguarding all of your
IDs.
Later, we attempted to explain the DigiPass service, and they were instructed to score their
satisfaction with it. It was shown that over 80% of respondents believe this service is
necessary and meets their needs.
