Why is it so hard to get a local development environment setup? Wouldn't it be nice to just sit down at your desk and start working instead of trying to figure out why vagrant blew up again? Or how about those times when you update PHP on your system but MAMP/WAMP still shows you using the old version? These experiences are consistently terrible for all developers. Even Sysadmins have a hard time getting vagrant to work half the time.

C# has evolved significantly over time, from version 1 through the latest version 8. Some key developments include the addition of generics, LINQ, asynchronous programming, and dynamic features. C# continues to focus on productivity and safe, efficient code with recent versions adding capabilities like nullable reference types, async streams, and ranges/indices. .NET has also evolved with improvements to performance and new functionality in versions like .NET Core 2.1. Looking ahead, .NET Core 3 will add support for desktop frameworks like WinForms and WPF.
OSCONF Jaipur - A Hitchhiker's Tour to Containerizing a Java application
As “the Cloud” becomes more and more widespread, now is a good time to assess how you can containerize your Java application. I assume you’re able to write a a Dockerfile around the generated JAR. However, each time the application’s code will change, the whole image will need to be rebuilt. If you’re deploying to a local Kubernetes cluster environment, this increases that much the length of the feedback loop.
In this demo-based talk, I’ll present different ways to get your Java app in a container: Dockerfile, Jib, and Cloud Native Buildpacks. We will also have a look at what kind of Docker image they generate, how they layer the images, whether those images are compatible with skaffold, etc.
Devops is (not ) a buzzword
DevOps aims to break down silos between development and operations teams through collaboration, automation, and continuous delivery. It addresses issues with traditional software development like long release cycles, bugs in production, and conflicts between teams. DevOps promotes integrating development and operations, establishing agile workflows, automating testing, treating infrastructure as code, and monitoring applications in production. While sometimes seen as a buzzword, DevOps is a philosophy that can help organizations reduce risks and improve their ability to rapidly deliver value to customers.

Puppet allows infrastructure to be automated and treated as code, facilitating CI workflows where development, test, and production environments can be duplicated and changes deployed in a controlled manner. The talk will also cover tips and tricks on customizing Homestead to fit custom needs as well as how to use Forge & Envoyer to deploy new versions of our application.

Spinnaker is an open source tool for deploying software releases to multiple cloud providers. Winnaker is distributed as a Docker container and makes it easy to pressure test Spinnaker and cloud environments by running multiple pipelines.

It’s been a busy year in the world of hardware acceleration APIs. Many industry-standard APIs, such as OpenCL and OpenVX, have been upgraded, and the industry has begun to adopt the new generation of low-level, explicit GPU APIs, such as Vulkan, that tightly integrate graphics and compute. Some of these APIs, like OpenVX and OpenCV, are vision-specific, while others, like OpenCL and Vulkan, are general-purpose. Some, like CUDA and Renderscript, are supplier-specific, while others are open standards that any supplier can adopt. Which ones should you use for your project?
In this presentation, Neil Trevett, President of the Khronos Group standards organization, updates the landscape of APIs for vision software development, explaining where each one fits in the development flow. As Trino users increasingly rely on cloud object storage for retrieving data, speed and cloud cost have become major challenges. The separation of compute and storage creates latency challenges when querying datasets; scanning data between storage and compute tiers becomes I/O bound. On the other hand, cloud API costs related to GET/LIST operations and cross-region data transfer add up quickly.
The newly introduced Trino file system cache by Alluxio aims to overcome the above challenges. In this session, Jianjian will dive into Trino data caching strategies, the latest test results, and discuss the multi-level caching architecture. This architecture makes Trino 10x faster for data lakes of any scale, from GB to EB.

Closing talk for the Performance Engineering track at Community Over Code EU (Bratislava, Slovakia, June 5 2024) https://eu.communityovercode.org/sessions/2024/why-apache-kafka-clusters-are-like-galaxies-and-other-cosmic-kafka-quandaries-explored/ Instaclustr (now part of NetApp) manages 100s of Apache Kafka clusters of many different sizes, for a variety of use cases and customers. For the last 7 years I’ve been focused outwardly on exploring Kafka application development challenges, but recently I decided to look inward and see what I could discover about the performance, scalability and resource characteristics of the Kafka clusters themselves. Using a suite of Performance Engineering techniques, I will reveal some surprising discoveries about cosmic Kafka mysteries in our data centres, related to: cluster sizes and distribution (using Zipf’s Law), horizontal vs. vertical scalability, and predicting Kafka performance using metrics, modelling and regression techniques. These insights are relevant to Kafka developers and operators.
