Editor's Notes

  1. Hello my name is Shari Henrikson and right now drug use is at an unacceptably high rate. We are going to go through three plans today that could benefit the decrease in that drug rate. We will also discuss the disadvantages of each plan and what the best solution is.
  2. This first strategy focuses on putting the money into more law enforcement. Theses are the suggested ways to do so, (read above bullets). Officers tightening down on border security and more officers to patrol. This would also be putting the focus on the large drug dealers. Have more funds for drug raids would give the ability to have more officers and better equipment. Stricter drug laws are wanted with this strategy such as the death penalty for drug related killings.
  3. With this plan there are multiple pros. The funds would be put into law enforcement which would mean more officers. Having more officers would equal more safety. There is always safety in numbers and a law enforcement officer that isn’t stretched too thin provides better service to the community. With more officers there would also be better border security and also with the stricter border protection. Targeting the larger drug dealers would impact drug distribution immensely and would cut down on the drug smaller drug dealers peddle. The stricter drug laws would also keep drug dealers off the streets for longer periods of time and that would benefit the community. There are a few cons to this plan as well. Mandatory Adult court for the youth could definitely be a disadvantage to this plan. When the youth are treated as adults and made to serve with adult criminals they do not become more upstanding but more felonious. Targeting large drug dealers would be a good thing but can be very dangerous and may put the lives of officers in more risk than normal. The death penalty for anyone involved in a gang related killings can be a negative thing as well. Putting a child under the age of 17 to death is simply not right and kids in gangs keep getting younger and younger.
  4. The second strategy focuses on putting money into community treatment programs. The number of the beds in detox centers would be increased. Research on drug dependency to find the main factors in helping become dependent on drugs.
  5. The second plan is a very simple one, put more money into detox and research. This simple plan has a couple pros but also have a couple cons. The benefits from adding more funds and creating more beds in detox centers you are able to house more recovering addicts. When researching into drug addiction they might be able to find ways to help addicts get off drugs more easily which would help immensely. One disadvantage of this is that by putting all the money into detox you are focused on the drug addiction but not what got the person there. Also there is a possibility when researching that they will not learn much more than they already know and then the time energy and money would go to waste.
  6. The last plan has a focus on education. Punishment nor treatment can make a teenager choose the right decision when it come to drugs. Education is opening their eyes into what drugs really do and why they are harmful. This strategy also would legalize drugs but would control the distribution of them.
  7. With the third plan the scales of benefit versus disadvantage are almost even. Some of the benefits include lowering the risk of youth drug abuse with education. An educated youth is less likely to take drugs because they know what it will do to their body. Legalizing all drugs could help lower drug use because it takes away the thrill of being above the law for some youth. Stricter control over drugs would lower the distribution rate as well as reducing crime and violence caused by drugs. Another benefit of drug legalization would be the taxes collected on legal drugs and would help to reduce the national debt. The disadvantages of this plan include the fact that legalizing all drug might backfire and not become a benefit. Without the risk of criminal punishment it may increase the flow of drugs onto the street. Also all drugs are definitely not beneficial. For example marijuana can be used for health purposes but there is not a benefit of legalizing methamphetamines. The last disadvantage to this plan is knowing or not knowing where exactly the line should be drawn. Who should be able to have access to these drugs? How are they being controlled? There are just to many questions left unanswered.
  8. So after going over these three plans (read above bullets) and the pros and cons for each of them there is one that stands out more than the others. Strategy three which focuses on education seems to be the most beneficial of the three. With educating the youth it is dealing with the actual problem and not just some of the factors from the problem. Education is one of the most powerful tools. An educated youth can make a better decision than an uneducated one. This plan also would decrease violence and crime involving drugs which would be a large benefit and it would help the national debt. Over all this is the most beneficial plan.
