Situated in the Central Visayas region and geographically occupying the central portion of the
Visayas group of Islands, the whole of Cebu including the highly urbanized cities of Cebu,
Lapu-lapu and Mandaue is a rather elongated-narrow Island that is said to extend 225 km
along the whole stretch - North to South. It is surrounded by the notable smaller islands of
Camotes, Malapascua, Olango, Mactan, Sumilon, Zaragosa, Pescador, Bitngil, Kinatarkan
and Bantayan islands. In the western and southern portion, it is separated by Tañon Strait
from the bigger Island of Negros, in the south-eastern portion by Cebu Strait from the Island
of Bohol and from Leyte in the north-eastern part by the Visayan Sea.
Description of Cebu Province Demographic Profile considers only the component cities and
municipalities and excludes that of the three highly urbanized cities of Mandaue, Lapu-Lapu
and Cebu. Although geographically part and parcel of the whole Cebu Island, they are
independent from the political jurisdiction of the Provincial Government.
Cebu Province in the latest 2020 Census of Population and Housing (CPH) registered a total
of 3,325,385 inhabitants. With a population growth rate (PGR) of 2.63% from 2015 to 2020, it
is the fastest growing province in Central Visayas. It grew by 13.15% or 386,403 higher than
the 2015 CPH, (26.95%) 706,023 more than the 2010 CPH and (53.91%) 1,164,816 more
than the 2000 CPH. After 30 years since the 1990 Census of Population and Housing (CPH)
of 1,708,839, Cebu’s population has almost doubled growing by 95%.
It is the most populous in Central Visayas representing 41.15% of the total population,
16.16% of the whole Visayas group of Islands and 3.05% of the entire Philippine population.
With a combined land area of 4,943.72 square kilometers or 1,908.78 square miles, the
computed population density is 673 persons per square kilometer or 1,742 persons per
square mile. From the three censuses data at the turn of the century, there is an increasing
trend in the population growth rates . (see Table 1)
The 0-14 year-old population is 1,097,905 while the 65 years and above is 174,542 for a total
dependents of 1,272,447 and a working age-group population of 2,052,937. Hence, the
dependency ratio is 61.98, i.e. each working age member has to support 62 persons. The
Child Dependency ratio is 53.48 while the Old-Age Dependency ratio is 8.5. The population is
relatively young with the median age at 24 years old.
With a computed doubling time of 26.65 years based on its current 2020 census population
growth rate of 2.63%, Cebu province’s population is estimated to double in size to 6,650,770
by year 2046. Whole of Cebu including the Tri-Cities has a computed doubling time of 31
years reaching a population of 10,302,548 by 2051 yet. The importance of doubling time in
development planning cannot be over-emphasized in that among other considerations
development planners will have to consider the holding or carrying capacity of the whole
island for its inhabitants in a particular time in the future. Among other things, development
planners will have to determine the basic infrastructure needs for that particular point in time.

Cebu’s population is predominantly young with a median age of 24 years i.e 50% of the
population is younger than 24 years old. This is evidenced by a broad-based-yet-gently-
sloping-sides population pyramid – typical of most areas with relatively high birth-death rates
coupled with a low median age, high dependency ratio suggesting an increasing population
growth rate trend. However, the 2020 median age is a little higher than the median age of 21
years recorded 20 years ago.
The sex ratio for all age-groups generally is at 103 in favour of more male than female. So,
there will be no marked effect on the marrying pattern among males as there are enough
female to marry. However, the sex ratio decreases as the population age-grouping increases
and is below 100 by the time it reaches the 50 to 80 years old and above. This demonstrates
that more males are dying earlier than the female population by the time 50 years old and
above is attained. Thus, women generally outlives men.

The island is generally safe since it does not lie within a major earthquake zone and relatively
sheltered from severe typhoons. However, in February 2012 Cebu was jolted by a previously
unrecorded fault and experienced the effects of a magnitude 6.7 earthquake that had its
epicentre in the island of Negros which was said to be the largest quake in the area in 90
years. But there were no reported major damages to buildings and fortunately no reported
loss of life. This was followed more than a year later in October 2013 by a stronger 7.2
magnitude earthquake which left more than a 100 dead and collapsed some buildings,
including five historical churches. The northern part experienced severe destruction during
the super typhoon Haiyan or Yolanda in 2013, and the southern portion has just experienced
major devastation from the super typhoon Rai or Odette last December 16, 2021.

  • 10. Situated in the Central Visayas region and geographically occupying the central portion of the Visayas group of Islands, the whole of Cebu including the highly urbanized cities of Cebu, Lapu-lapu and Mandaue is a rather elongated-narrow Island that is said to extend 225 km along the whole stretch - North to South. It is surrounded by the notable smaller islands of Camotes, Malapascua, Olango, Mactan, Sumilon, Zaragosa, Pescador, Bitngil, Kinatarkan and Bantayan islands. In the western and southern portion, it is separated by Tañon Strait from the bigger Island of Negros, in the south-eastern portion by Cebu Strait from the Island of Bohol and from Leyte in the north-eastern part by the Visayan Sea. Description of Cebu Province Demographic Profile considers only the component cities and municipalities and excludes that of the three highly urbanized cities of Mandaue, Lapu-Lapu and Cebu. Although geographically part and parcel of the whole Cebu Island, they are independent from the political jurisdiction of the Provincial Government.
  • 11. Cebu Province in the latest 2020 Census of Population and Housing (CPH) registered a total of 3,325,385 inhabitants. With a population growth rate (PGR) of 2.63% from 2015 to 2020, it is the fastest growing province in Central Visayas. It grew by 13.15% or 386,403 higher than the 2015 CPH, (26.95%) 706,023 more than the 2010 CPH and (53.91%) 1,164,816 more than the 2000 CPH. After 30 years since the 1990 Census of Population and Housing (CPH) of 1,708,839, Cebu’s population has almost doubled growing by 95%. It is the most populous in Central Visayas representing 41.15% of the total population, 16.16% of the whole Visayas group of Islands and 3.05% of the entire Philippine population. With a combined land area of 4,943.72 square kilometers or 1,908.78 square miles, the computed population density is 673 persons per square kilometer or 1,742 persons per square mile. From the three censuses data at the turn of the century, there is an increasing trend in the population growth rates . (see Table 1) The 0-14 year-old population is 1,097,905 while the 65 years and above is 174,542 for a total dependents of 1,272,447 and a working age-group population of 2,052,937. Hence, the dependency ratio is 61.98, i.e. each working age member has to support 62 persons. The Child Dependency ratio is 53.48 while the Old-Age Dependency ratio is 8.5. The population is relatively young with the median age at 24 years old. With a computed doubling time of 26.65 years based on its current 2020 census population growth rate of 2.63%, Cebu province’s population is estimated to double in size to 6,650,770 by year 2046. Whole of Cebu including the Tri-Cities has a computed doubling time of 31 years reaching a population of 10,302,548 by 2051 yet. The importance of doubling time in development planning cannot be over-emphasized in that among other considerations development planners will have to consider the holding or carrying capacity of the whole island for its inhabitants in a particular time in the future. Among other things, development planners will have to determine the basic infrastructure needs for that particular point in time.

  • 13. Cebu’s population is predominantly young with a median age of 24 years i.e 50% of the population is younger than 24 years old. This is evidenced by a broad-based-yet-gently- sloping-sides population pyramid – typical of most areas with relatively high birth-death rates coupled with a low median age, high dependency ratio suggesting an increasing population growth rate trend. However, the 2020 median age is a little higher than the median age of 21 years recorded 20 years ago. The sex ratio for all age-groups generally is at 103 in favour of more male than female. So, there will be no marked effect on the marrying pattern among males as there are enough female to marry. However, the sex ratio decreases as the population age-grouping increases and is below 100 by the time it reaches the 50 to 80 years old and above. This demonstrates that more males are dying earlier than the female population by the time 50 years old and above is attained. Thus, women generally outlives men. However, in February 2012 Cebu was jolted by a previously unrecorded fault and experienced the effects of a magnitude 6.7 earthquake that had its epicentre in the island of Negros which was said to be the largest quake in the area in 90 years. But there were no reported major damages to buildings and fortunately no reported loss of life. This was followed more than a year later in October 2013 by a stronger 7.2 magnitude earthquake which left more than a 100 dead and collapsed some buildings, including five historical churches. The northern part experienced severe destruction during the super typhoon Haiyan or Yolanda in 2013, and the southern portion has just experienced major devastation from the super typhoon Rai or Odette last December 16, 2021.
