really able to garner support as it was during many other movements such as Civil

Rachel Carson s Silent Spring (1962), which exposed the harmful effects of pollutants
such as DDT on the environment and the public. While minute amounts of DDT
cause little to no harm to the organisms that are affected, as DDT moves up the food
chain, it becomes more and more concentrated. A generally accepted value is that for
each level up in the food chain, the concentration of pollutants increases by a
thousand times. The effects of Silent Spring cannot be overestimated. As people
began to become more informed about pollution, more people demanded that the

For this post, the first video I had chosen was Jeanette MacDonald and Binnie
Barnes sang A Twinkle in Her Eye in a 1942 musical film called I Married an
Angel. By watching the clip only, I thought the style of this recording was like an
operetta. It had spoken parts to tell the light story. The sounds that came out of the
characters were very soft, even though the singing technique was more like the one
that was commonly used in operas, and the lyrics were pretty approachable. Also, I
had noticed that the acting in this piece, including dancing, was somewhat
exaggerated. I considered that those theatrical facial expressions and moves were
expressed to aim to please the audiences.
The second video I had watched was Jerry Orbach led the original cast of the 1980
Broadway musical 42nd Street to perform Lullaby of Broadway on the Tony Awards.
Clearly, there were more dancing components involved in this show. The
choreography was great because it could well coordinate with the lyrics and the

significant changes in the U.S. student population. In particular, the number and
percentage of immigrants in schools have increased dramatically since 1970. From
1970 to 1995, the number of immigrant children, ages 5 to 20, living in the United
States more than doubled, from 3.5 to 8.6 million. As the number grew, immigrant
children represented a larger percentage of students in U.S. schools, increasing from
6% in 1970 to 16% in 1995 and 19% in 1997 (Ruiz de Velasco Fix, 2000). While
their numbers have increased, English language learners (ELLs) lag significantly
behind their fluent English speaking peers in reading. For example, in California,
