2. EARLY YEARS
 Dr. Verghese Kurien was born on November 26, 1921 in Calicut province (Kozhikode) of
Kerala.
 His father was a civil surgeon in British Cochin and his mother was a highly educated woman.
 Dr. Kurien joined Loyola College in Madras and attained his degree in B.Sc in Physics ,he was
also very active in sports and represented the college in cricket, badminton, boxing and
tennis.
 He is an Mechanical Engineer from the College of Engineering, Madras University.
 Then he went to the USA on government scholarship where he pursued his degree in Master
of Science in Metallurgy Engineering from Michigan State University.
 He returned to India after completion of his studies and on May 13, 1949 and he headed for
Anand.

3. WHO IS DR. KURIEN ?
 The MILKMAN of India.
 The man behind genesis of AMUL.
 The Father of ‘ THE WHITE REVOLUTION’ in India.
 Architect of the ‘Operation Flood’.
 Known for making Dairy the largest rural employment schemes in India after
Independence.

4. BIRTH OF AMUL
 The Kaira District Co-operative Milk Production unit
was taken over by Dr. Kurien in 1950, which was later
named as AMUL.
 Amul Dairy was founded to stop the exploitation of the
poor farmers by the middlemen.
 Based on Dr. Kurien’s vision, and extra ordinary
intelligence Amul became India’s largest growing
institute and company in the early years.
 India’s first PM, Jawaharlal Nehru inaugurated Amul
Dairy in Anand and embraced Dr. Kurien for his huge
help in developing the nation.

5. CONTRIBUTION
 Its because of Dr. Kurien’s visionary mission that India is the largest milk producers in the
world.
 Amul, today is the most preferred brand in Asian Countries.
 The ‘Milkman of India’ took India from Milk deficient country to the number One milk
production country in the World which even overtook milk abundant country like
Netherlands.
 He was one of the first Social Entrepreneur India saw in Post-Independence period.
