2. Drop Caps: These are
normally used to break
up large amounts of
text or catch the
reader’s eye. Here it is
being used to draw the
reader’s attention to an
area of the article.
3. CVI: The CVI is the central visual
image and is used to introduce the
topic of the spread so that the reader
can judge weather or not it is worth
reading. Here the image is of the
Arctic Monkeys. They are presented
in a fairly natural pose, more
emphasis is placed on the two band
members in the fore ground as they
are the ‘most important’ members,
(left being the main guitarist and
right being lead singer). The band
members are all dressed similarly as
the article is about a new arrival
joining, the similar clothes is a
symbol of them welcoming him as
one of their own.
4. Stand First: A stand first
is used to introduce the
article and put it into
context. Here the reader
can clearly see the article
is about the new member
by reading the stand first
(the Joshua code, the new
member being Josh
Homme).
5. By-line: By-lines are used to
inform the reader of the
writer and/or photographer
who created the article. This
is so they can be credited but
also some people like to read
articles by certain people so
the by-line can help them to
identify the author. The byline for this article is located
next to the stand first.
