2. Dot has been present in the Art History since the beginning, from the
paintings on the walls of the caves to contemporary painting and
design.
An image of a rhinoceros, made in a pointillist style, found
in Chauvet Cave in FranceHand and dots in El Castillo
Cave, Cantabria.

3. MOSAICS
• The mosaics are
made by lots of
little pieces of
pottery. So it means
they are made with
a lot of dots.
• We can find great
examples of
mosaics in Roman,
Islamic and
Byzantine Art.

Modernist artista as Gaudí helped to keep alive this ancient art. Gaudí found is own way of using mosaic
and he called it trencadís.

10. POINTILLISM
• Pointillism is a technique of painting in which small, distinct dots of
pure color are applied in patterns to form an image. Georges Seurat
and Paul Signac developed the technique in 1886. The term
Pointillism was first coined by art critics in the late 1880s to ridicule
the works of these artists.
• The technique relies on the ability of the eye and mind of the viewer
to mix the color spots into a fuller range of tones with the help of
distance. Pointillism used the optical mix.
• This is the same way computer screens work today. The pixels in the
computer screen are just like the dots in a Pointillist painting

15. The spanish painter Joan Miró painted series
of 22 Constellations, which consist of black
dots representing stars on a white ground.

16. Robert Delaunay, from France, was one of the first
abstract painters. He loved representing circles in his
artworks.

17. Paul Klee made wonderful paintings using dots.

18. Roy Lichestein was an american pop artist who used the
aesthetic of comic and printed images that always have dots as
well because of the procedure of printing.

19. Chuck Close is an american artist. He paints portraits using dots
developing a new concept of mosaic.

20. Yakoi Kusama is a famous contemporary japanese artist whose
artwork is crowed with dots. Most of the times Kusamas dots
look like polka dots. She makes paintings, costumes or spaces
crowed with them.

21. Dots everywhere!

22. The aboriginal art is an ancient, but also modern, way
of representing any kind of images in Australia. This
type of images use the dot constantly.
