Editor's Notes

  • #2 Welcome to our presentation. Today I’d like to talk about What is DNS and its configurations.
  • #3 Short for Domain Name System (or Service or Server), an Internet service that translates domain names into IP addresses. Because domain names are alphabetic, they're easier to remember. The Internet however, is really based on IP addresses. Every time you use a domain name, therefore, a DNS service must translate the name into the corresponding IP address. For example, the domain name kdu.ac.lk  might translate to 222.165.190.172 The DNS system is, in fact, its own network. If one DNS server doesn't know how to translate a particular domain name, it asks another one, and so on, until the correct IP address is returned.
  • #4 If you've ever used the Internet, it's a good bet that you've used the Domain Name System, or DNS, even without realizing it. DNS is a protocol within the set of standards for how computers exchange data on the Internet and on many private networks, known as the TCP/IP protocol suite. Its basic job is to turn a user-friendly domain name like "kdu.ac.lk" into an Internet Protocol (IP) address like 222.165.190.172 that computers use to identify each other on the network. It's like your computer's GPS for the Internet.
