Dolly the sheep was the first cloned mammal. She was born on July 5, 1996 at the Roslin Institute in Scotland through somatic cell nuclear transfer. Her DNA came from a cell taken from a Finn-Dorset ewe's udder. This cell was fused with an egg cell from a black-faced ewe, implanted into a surrogate black-faced ewe, and gave birth to Dolly. Dolly proved that differentiated cells from an adult animal can be reprogrammed to produce a genetically identical offspring, challenging previous beliefs that cloning was only possible with pluripotent stem cells.
