James Marsh was born April 30 1963 in Cornwall, England. He is known
as both a director and producer.
2. • James Marsh is a film director known for
directing many films, a successful one being the
cult film Wisconsin Death Trip starring Marcus
Monroe and Sir Ian Holm the film was nominated
for two BAFTA Awards in 1999, and won the TV
Award for Best Photography. He also won the
2008 Academy Award for Best Documentary
Feature for directing the film Man on Wire.
Marsh know lives in Copenhagen, Denmark,
with his wife and two children.

documentary that marsh directed. The
documentary looks at a dangerous tightrope
walker Philippe Petit's who performs his
courageous high-wire routine between twin
towers in new York city. The film used archive
footage, exclusive interviews and had to recreate
scenes to accurately demonstrate what happened
in America on the 7thAugust 1974.
• Notably the film won the BAFTA Award for best
British film in 2009.

6. Sir David Attenborough
• Born 8 may 1926.
• Joined BBC Television in 1954 and still works with them today.
• 1985 he was knighted and became Sir David Attenborough.
• •His first programme for the BBC was called 'Coelacanth‘.

• In his younger years Attenborough was strongly involved and would appear on
camera. Using conventions of participatory and observational documentaries. During
recent times Attenborough's age has meant he is unable participate in the making of
the documentaries this has meant he is now not visible on screen but narrates to us the
extraordinary wildlife, this has become his preferred style nowadays.

part of his documentary and he attracts a wide range of audience.

influencers in television, His ability to raise awareness to the need to
protect the planet is not only enjoyable but fascinating. In his most
recent documentary Blue Planet 2 received the UK’s largest amount
of views in the whole of 2017.
Attenborough created a heart warming documentary through the voice
of the narrator, showing clips of the animals this engages the audience
with his involvement.

10. Louis Theroux
• Before becoming a documenter Theroux worked as a journalist in
America.
• Theroux is a British documentary filmmaker and broadcaster. He is
known for his documentary series' such as Louis Theroux's Weird
Weekends.
11. • Louis has a very controversial style of interviewing, the subjects are
also incredible and help make him as well known as he is today.
Theroux is able to push questions that most people are not brave
enough to ask in order to get the answerers we want as an audience.
He does this well and still shows a neutral side to the argument, and
manages to inform the audience with events that are happening in
our society.
• Theroux has brought his own journalistic style to documentary's. This
can be down in his direct interviews.
12. • His style of interviews allows the subject to explain there whole story,
this is helpful for the audience as we are put in a place where we
achieve the clearest picture. This id down to the clear description
Theroux manages to get out of the interviewees through his persona.
He also tends to probe the interviewees with uncomfortable
questions which help the entrainment factor.

15. Michael Moore
• Michael Moore is a filmmaker from Michigan, arguably most known
for his role of being a political activist, he is seen to be encouraging
Americans to become more involved in politics. One of his premiering
films as a documentary filmmaker is “Bowling for Columbine”, a film
exploring the laws of gun control in the United States, This
documentary won many awards abd is seen as won of the best
documentarys made
• Michael Moore has become a celebrated filmmaker. Moore has been
nominated for over 76 awards, winingn 47 of them.
16. Moore uses different styles to engage himself into the topic in his
films. 2007 film “Sicko”, documents the difficulties on going in the
health care system in America, the use of his voice is is narration, to
help expresse his thoughts. This also allows for the clips to be matched
with relevant information about the topic and inform the audience.
However in various other documentary’s he puts himself in a more
participatory role where the events and messages are directly affected
by his actions.
19. Broomfield started his career by creating observational documentaries
without any narration just text between the clips. The editing of scenes
would be chronological linking them together. He eventually
progressed to making more self-reflexive styles of documentary. His
films focus on how the film was created and on the main subject. He
again later decided to change his style using "Direct Cinema“.
20. • Broomfield has often worked with little crew. Often he records the
sound himself to create a better quality. He does this to create a
personalised documentary which he can take us through. He uses
both observational and reflexive conventions. He aims to present
situations as real as he can. The point of many of his documentary's is
to challenge stereotypes and portray people or topics in a positive
way.
