History
HISTORY 1920 – 1930
The first real thriller film was a silent film
called ‘Lodger’ (1926) by director Alfred
Hitchcock. He then went on to direct
another thriller, ‘Blackmail’ (1929).
One of the earliest thriller films actually
had crime as it’s sub-genre, this film was
directed by Fritz Lang, ‘Spies’ (1928) about
a criminal spy.
Thriller’s Beginnings
The thriller genre began in 1697 with the ‘Little
Red Riding Hood’ novel. In 1980 one of the first
modern style thrillers were written – Focused more
on psychological factors.
The crime genres earliest recognition was in 1827.
These genres came together in the early 1900’s –
However very different from what is around today.

became an aspect of life, also around the time
that education became more accessible and
therefore more stories (Considerably crime)
were written.

HISTORY 1990 – Present
Thriller films took another turn in the 90’s,
using trapped victims needing to escape,
influencing many films, such as ‘Misery’
(1990). Detectives then became a big part
of the genre, for the audience to see the
crime being solved.
HISTORY 1940 – 1960
Alfred Hitchcock went on to direct several
thriller films such as ‘Foreign
Correspondent’ (1940) and ‘Shadow of a
Doubt’ (1943)
HISTORY 1970 – 1980
1970 had a violent start, ‘Wake in Fright’
(1971) by Ted Kotcheff almost overlapped
the entire horror genre. At this point,
Thriller had now taken a turn to being
violent and evil.

genre are from a widely spread range of
dates and storylines including ‘Pulp
Fiction’ from 1994 to ‘The Wolf of Wall
Street’ from 1013. This also shows that
there has not been a new crime film good
enough to reach the top 5.

century, suggesting audiences have
enjoyed the new thriller films more
– Or that the film studio’s are
making better thrillers. All 5 of the
top films have sub-genres, showing
that maybe the lone genre is not
that popular. The 3 of the films are
