NetBSD on Google Compute Engine (en)
NetBSD can run on Google Compute Engine virtual machines. To set this up, one must install the Google Cloud SDK and create a NetBSD disk image with the vioscsi driver. This disk image is uploaded to Google Cloud Storage and used to create a virtual machine instance on Google Compute Engine. When the instance boots, the boot messages can be viewed which show the virtual devices like virtio SCSI and network being initialized and the root file system mounting from the persistent disk.

Lightweight Virtualization in Linux
امروزه مجازیسازی یکی از روشهای پرطرفدار برای پیادهسازی کارگزاران وب است. این فناوری موجب کاهش هزینههای تجارتهای کوچک میشود. مجازیسازی یکی از جنبههای مهم ارائه خدمات ابری است که حتی برای تجارتهای بزرگ نیز از جذابیت زیادی برخوردار است.
در این سخنرانی به امکاناتی همچون Control Groups و Containers که در نسخههای جدیدتر هسته سیستم عامل لینوکس پیادهسازی شده است میپردازیم. هرچند این امکانات مجازیسازی کامل را به ارمغان نمیآورند، اما بسیاری از مزایای آن را با سربار بسیار کم در سطح هسته فراهم میکنند. راه حلهایی همچون LXC و Docker بر اساس این امکانات توانستهاند به نتایج خوبی برسند که هم از لحاظ تجاری در خور توجه هستند و هم تبعات و کاربردهای امنیتی دارند.
Docker and kubernetes
Docker allows building portable software that can run anywhere by packaging an application and its dependencies in a standardized unit called a container. Kubernetes is an open-source system for automating deployment, scaling, and management of containerized applications. It groups containers that make up an application into logical units for easy management and discovery. Kubernetes can replicate containers, provide load balancing, coordinate updates between containers, and ensure availability. Defining applications as Kubernetes resources allows them to be deployed and updated easily across a cluster.

Docker offers a new, lightweight approach to application
portability. Applications are shipped using a common container format,
and managed with a high-level API. Their processes run within isolated
namespaces which abstract the operating environment, independently of
the distribution, versions, network setup, and other details of this
environment.
This "containerization" has often been nicknamed "the new
virtualization". But containers are more than lightweight virtual
machines. Beyond their smaller footprint, shorter boot times, and
higher consolidation factors, they also bring a lot of new features
and use cases which were not possible with classical virtual machines.
We will focus on one of those features: separation of operational
concerns. Specifically, we will demonstrate how some fundamental tasks
like logging, remote access, backups, and troubleshooting can be
entirely decoupled from the deployment of applications and
services. This decoupling results in independent, smaller, simpler
moving parts; just like microservice architectures break down large
monolithic apps in more manageable components.

The talk is about operating system virtualization technology known as OpenVZ. This is an effective way of partitioning a Linux machine into multiple isolated Linux containers. All containers are running on top of one single Linux kernel, which results in excellent density, performance and manageability. The talk gives an overall description of OpenVZ building blocks, such as namespaces, cgroups and various resource controllers. A few features, notably live migration and virtual swap, are described in greater details. Results of some performance measurements against VMware, Xen and KVM are given. Finally, we will provide a status update on merging bits and pieces of OpenVZ kernel to upstream Linux kernel, and share our plans for the future.

KVM and docker LXC Benchmarking with OpenStack
Passive benchmarking with docker LXC and KVM using OpenStack hosted in SoftLayer. These results provide initial incite as to why LXC as a technology choice offers benefits over traditional VMs and seek to provide answers as to the typical initial LXC question -- "why would I consider Linux Containers over VMs" from a performance perspective.
Results here provide insight as to:
- Cloudy ops times (start, stop, reboot) using OpenStack.
- Guest micro benchmark performance (I/O, network, memory, CPU).
- Guest micro benchmark performance of MySQL; OLTP read, read / write complex and indexed insertion.
- Compute node resource consumption; VM / Container density factors.
- Lessons learned during benchmarking.
The tests here were performed using OpenStack Rally to drive the OpenStack cloudy tests and various other linux tools to test the guest performance on a "micro level". The nova docker virt driver was used in the Cloud scenario to realize VMs as docker LXC containers and compared to the nova virt driver for libvirt KVM.

App container rkt
This document discusses container technologies including App Container (appc) and rkt. It provides an overview of appc components like the image format, discovery, and executor. Linux container & docker
Containerization allows running multiple isolated Linux instances called containers on a single host. Containers leverage features like namespaces and cgroups in the Linux kernel to isolate CPU, memory, storage and networking access for each container. Docker is a popular containerization tool that packages applications and dependencies into lightweight Linux containers that can run on any infrastructure. Containers are more lightweight than virtual machines and allow higher density and lower overhead.
OSv at Usenix ATC 2014
OSv is a new operating system designed specifically for virtual machines in cloud environments. It aims to run existing cloud applications faster than Linux by simplifying the OS design to focus on a single application per VM. OSv implements many Linux APIs for compatibility but explores new APIs and designs to further reduce overhead, such as lock-free networking and direct access to page tables. Benchmark results show OSv outperforming Linux on networking, context switching, and memory-intensive workloads.
Arm device tree and linux device drivers
This document discusses how the Linux kernel supports different ARM boards using a common source code base. It describes how device tree is used to describe hardware in a board-agnostic way. The kernel initializes machine-specific code via the device tree and initializes drivers by matching compatible strings. This allows a single kernel binary to support multiple boards by abstracting low-level hardware details into the device tree rather than the kernel source. The document also contrasts the ARM approach to the x86 approach, where BIOS abstraction and standardized buses allow one kernel to support most x86 hardware.

Esxi troubleshooting
vSphere defines VMware's virtualization product suite, including the ESXi hypervisor, vCenter management server, and vSphere Client interface. ESXi uses a proprietary kernel called vmkernel along with some open source components. Key features of vSphere include VMware HA, vMotion, and DRS for managing and migrating VMs across hosts. Troubleshooting performance issues involves tools like esxtop to monitor CPU, memory, and swap usage on ESXi hosts and VMs.

Linux uses /proc/iomem as a "Rosetta Stone" to establish relationships between software and hardware. /proc/iomem maps physical memory addresses to devices, similar to how the Rosetta Stone helped map Egyptian hieroglyphs to Greek and decode ancient Egyptian texts. This virtual file allows the kernel to interface with devices by providing address translations between physical and virtual memory spaces.
