- 1. DO WE KNOW WHAT IS MAFURA BUTTER PRODUCED FROM NATAL MAHOGANY AND CAN ALSO BE CERTIFIED ORGANIC ? Trichilia emetica is a tree in the family Meliaceae, commonly known as the Natal mahogany. It is an evergreen tree,[1] with handsome glossy dark green leaves and a wide spreading crown. Its sweet- scented flowers attract bees and birds. Trichilia emetica, an African plant, is used in traditional medicine to treat a variety of ailments including abdominal pain, dermatitis, haemorrhoids, jaundice, chest pain and its used as emetic, diuretic, and purgative properties, as well as for labour induction. The oil has been used traditionally to help moisturise the hair and skin. Fruits yield a very fast moving MAFURA BUTTER having properties better than SHEA.
- 2. What does MAFURA Fruit YIELD ? The ripe mafura fruit yields two types of oil: the edible “mafura oil” which is extracted from the flesh seed envelope/aril; and the bitter tasting, emetic and inedible “mafura butter” or “mafura tallow”, which is extracted from the seed kernel. It has been reported that a 4-step consecutive processing (degumming, neutralization, bleaching and deodorization) of the mafura butter can produce an oil with an acceptable flavour
- 4. BENEFITS OF MAFURA FRUIT Traditionally, mafura butter is used as a hair conditioner, a colorant, applied to the skin and also used for medicinal purposes. The mafura butter which is obtained from the seed kernel on the other hand is used in making soap, candle and wood polish. The butter is also used as a body ointment and for medicinal purposes . Mafura butter possesses a nutty aroma and is edible and hence, can be used for cooking as an oil. Mafura butter is rich in essential fatty acids and showcases strong antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, making it a useful product to be used in the cosmetic and personal care industry.
