Each ratio reflects the level of sacrifice and self-restraint a society is willing to accept, against promises of prosperity and freedom. Do elements of globalization, such as Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), negatively affect the ability of countries in the Global South to preserve their culture? This research aims to answer this question by employing a cross-sectional comparative case study analysis utilizing methods of difference. Thailand and Cambodia are compared as they are in the same region and have a similar culture. The metric of difference between Thailand and Cambodia is their ability to preserve their culture. This ability is operationalized by their respective attitudes towards FDI; Thailand imposes stringent regulations and limitations on FDI while Cambodia does not hesitate to accept most FDI and imposes fewer limitations. The evidence from this study suggests that FDI from globally influential countries with high gross domestic products (GDPs) (e.g. China, U.S.) challenges the ability of countries with lower GDPs (e.g. Cambodia) to protect their culture. Furthermore, the ability, or lack thereof, of the receiving countries to protect their culture is amplified by the existence and implementation of restrictive FDI policies imposed by their governments.
My study abroad in Bali, Indonesia, inspired this research topic as I noticed how globalization is changing the culture of its people. I learned their language and way of life which helped me understand the beauty and importance of cultural preservation. Scotland is in many ways a microcosm of this challenge. It has become a hub for creative industries, is home to several world-class universities and a thriving community of businesses – strengths that need to be harness and leveraged. But it also has high levels of deprivation, with homelessness reaching a record high and nearly half a million people living in very deep poverty last year. Scotland won’t be truly thriving unless it finds ways to ensure that all its inhabitants benefit from growth and investment. - 2. What is Dividend Policy Dividend policy is the policy that the company adopts for paying out the dividends to the company’s shareholders. It includes the percentage of the amount at which the dividend is to be paid out to the stockholders and how frequently the amount is paid to the company.
- 3. Determinants of Dividends Type of Industry: Industries that are characterized by stability of earnings may formulate a more consistent policy as to dividends than those having an uneven flow of income. They are better off in having a conservative approach to dividend pay-out. Age of corporation: Newly formed companies will have to retain major part of their earnings for further growth and expansion. They have to follow a conservative policy unlike established companies.
- 4. The extent of share distribution: A closely held company is likely to get consent of the shareholders for the suspension of dividends or for following a conservative dividend policy. Reduction in dividends can be affected but not without the co- operation of shareholders. Business Cycles: When the company experiences a boom, it is prudent to save up and make reserves for dips. A company to maintain dividend even in depressing markets to retain and attract more shareholders.
- 5. Changes in Government Policies: There could be the change in the dividend policy of a company due to the imposed changes by the government. The Indian government had put temporary restrictions on companies to pay dividends during 1974-75. Trends of Profits: The trend should be properly analysed to find the average earnings of the company. This average number should be then studied in relation to the general economic conditions.
- 6. Future Financial Requirements: Dividend pay-out will also depend on the future requirements for the additional capital. A company having profitable investment opportunities is justified in retaining the earnings. Taxation Policy: Corporate taxes affect dividends directly and indirectly in as much as they reduce the residual profits after tax available for shareholders. At present the amount of dividend declared is tax free in the hands of shareholders.
