I’m Kathy. My today’s topic is about diversity in schools. Canada is multicultural country where there are many immigrants come from various backgrounds living in the same community.
My presentation will have a brief summary of education policy about diversity, explaining some benefits of diversity and discussing some of current issues surrounding diversity.
The first question is: Do you think it is controversial issue? Do you think diversity is important? How do you think diversity should be seen and treated by students, teachers, and parents?
Be aware of the importance of diversity, our government has provided updated policy. In B.C: the government wants to ensure that every student will have the opportunity to participate in school and to receive equal education .The school system will have the responsibility to help student to honor, appreciate, and respect the diversity. In Quebec: the mission is educating students within a caring, safe and inclusive learning community by recognizing and valuing the diversity of its community.By providing policy with clear statement, rational, detail policy and procedures, diversity is one of the most important aspects in Canada’ schools. . We want to make sure that diversity will bring benefits to students. That leads to second question is:
Diversity is one of the key for innovation. Students who come from different background will bring more creativity andcritical thinking. Basically, they will open more ideas and moreways of solving the problem compared to just one background. Students are opened to more challenges in thinking when they have a chance to interact with students from different background.Diverseenvironments exposed students to new perspectives and encouraged them to examine their own perspectives; and diversity fostered interactions that helped develop leadership skills and critical thinking
the common causes of bullying are rooted in diversity: racial differences, differences in family formation/structure, perceived sexual orientation, learning disabilities, and religious differences. As the percentage of 'different' children in schools and in society increases the problem of bullying grows along with it. We can't escape diversity-even if we wanted to. It is reflected in the languages we speak, the colors of our skin, our gender, our age, our traditions. The fundamental way to 'bully-bust' is to teach young kids to respect and celebrate all cultures, choices and 'abilities'.
The city council in Richmond, B.C., has voted not to follow up on a petition, presented to them on Monday evening, asking for a bylaw that would ban "Chinese-only" signs in the city.A group of Richmond residents collected 1,000 signatures supporting their position that the majority of signs in any one area of the city should have at least one of Canada's official languages — English or French.Richmond, B.C., in its wisdom, has decided that Chinese-only commercial signs aren’t a problem — or at least not a problem the city government should solve. Richmond became a favorite place for immigrants from Hong Kong to settle after 1987. According to data collected by Richmond city hall, as of May 2006, just over 41 per cent of Richmond residents were Canadian by birth, while about 57 per cent were immigrants. The overall number of immigrants settling in the city has been increasing over the past 15 years, with people from mainland China now the dominant group.
Under Alberta’s new Education Act, homeschoolers and faith-based schools will not be permitted to teach that homosexual acts are sinful as part of their academic program, says the spokesperson for Education Minister Thomas Lukaszuk.“clearly signaling that they are in fact planning to violate the private conversations families have in their own homes.”“A government that seeks that sort of control over our personal lives should be feared and opposed,”Christian homeschooling families can continue to impart Biblical teachings on homosexuality in their homes, “as long as it’s not part of their academic program of studies and instructional materials.”“What they want to do about their ideology elsewhere, that’s their family business. But a fundamental nature of our society is to respect diversity,”
