Comparisons and Contrasts:Windows Phone 7 Marketplace and Google Android Market Apple App Store - iPad Apple App Store - iPhone BlackBerry App World Google Android Market Nokia Ovi Store Palm App Catalog Windows Marketplace for Mobile Windows Phone 7 Marketplace Distimo was founded to solve the challenges created by a widely fragmented app store marketplace filled with equally fragmented information and statistics. Distimo was launched shortly after the introduction of the first app store. App stores have clearly shown since that time that they are the way forward for content distribution. The app store model offers an enormous opportunity for developers to get their content out and dramatically improves content discovery by consumers. However, the mobile market has long been characterized by fragmentation, which is also displayed in the wide range of mobile application stores that were launched from 2009 on. January 2011 NEW AND NOTEWORTHY This publication covers the Apple App Store for iPad, the Apple App Store for iPhone, BlackBerry App World, Google Android Market, Nokia Ovi Store, Palm App Catalog, Windows Marketplace for Mobile (6.x), and Windows Phone 7 Marketplace during January 2011. The major findings are: • Two app stores are clearly ahead of the other app stores in terms of growth rates in January 2011: Windows Phone 7 Marketplace (30%) and Google Android Market (18%). However, the evolution of both stores is very different, and will be examined in more detail in this report. • The overlap of applications between countries is over 97% for all countries in both the Google Android Market and Windows Phone 7 Marketplace. However, if we look at the 100 most popular applications only, the overlap between countries is much lower in Microsoft’s store than in Android Market, indicating that it is much easier for consumers to find locally popular content in the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace than in the Google Android Market. • Google Android Market is the only store that has more free than paid applications, and the proportion of free applications increased again in January. • Windows Phone 7 Marketplace has already attracted some of the largest cross-store publishers, but it still has a long way to go to attract the same number of cross-store publishers as the Google Android Market or the Apple App Store. In this report, we will compare these two stores and examine differences and similarities in their evolution. Looking at the growth, we see that the number of paid applications increased by 1,027 in Windows Phone 7 Marketplace while the number free applications increased by 576. The Google Android Market is known for the large proportion of free applications in the store, and is the only store that has more free than paid applications, with 63% of all applications being free. This trend did not change in favor of paid applications in January, as the number of free applications increased by 16,150 and paid applications increased by 6,847. The proportion of identical applications available in both countries is always over 97% in both the Google Android Market and Windows Phone 7 Marketplace when comparing two countries, regardless of the countries being compared. However, when comparing the overlap of top applications only, a large difference between the Google Android Market and Windows Phone 7 Marketplace can be observed. The overlap between the 100 most popular applications of two countries is close to 100% in nearly all of the countries in the Google Android Market, as can be seen in the matrix. The most notable exception is the United States, where the overlap with other countries is significantly lower. The Pandora Radio and T-Mobile My Account applications mentioned in the top lists of this report are two examples of applications that are popular in the United States only. The matrix of the most popular application overlap in Windows Phone 7 however, shows a much more localized picture of the market. Comparatively, all countries have an overlap between 44% and 69%. Of these cross-store developers, 147 published at least one application in the Google Android Market, and 57 of the 200 most popular cross-store publishers published applications in the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace. While this figure is much lower than the number of top cross-store publishers in the Apple App Store or Google Android Market, it is comparable to the other stores that have existed for much longer. Windows Phone 7 is clearly already a platform that large developers are watching closely.
