The first reports of a mechanical dishwashing device date back to an 1850 patent by Joel Houghton for a hand-powered wood machine. In 1911, the Walker brothers received a patent for a new dishwashing machine that could be operated automatically using a gasoline engine. The first General Electric branded dishwasher was produced in 1932 after GE acquired the Walker Brothers Company. Washing machines also emerged in the late 19th century, with the first English patent issued in 1791 for a washing and wringing machine. Models from the 1910s onward began incorporating electric power.
