Diseases can be caused by microorganisms and pathogens like bacteria, viruses, fungi and protists. Infectious diseases can be passed from organism to organism and are caused by pathogens, while non-infectious diseases cannot be transmitted. The immune system fights pathogens by distinguishing their type and reacting accordingly. When a pathogen enters the body, it can damage cells or entire body systems. Common infectious diseases include colds caused by respiratory viruses, flu caused by influenza virus, strep throat from bacteria, athlete's foot from fungi, and AIDS caused by the HIV virus.
