Discuss your reflection on yourfirst week in the community
Reflection on my first week of visit at Kwadabeka community. We visited Kwadabeka in a
group consist of four Occupational therapy and two Speech therapy students and we went
to different facilities which includes primary school, school for children with special needs,
clinics, supermarkets, meeting with people and chatting with them about the challenges
they countenance in the community. “Knowledge is power, community is strength and
positive attitude is everything” Lance Armstrong. Our mission was to collect information
from community members concerning the strength and weakness of the community and
work together as a team in developing plans and ideas to help the community channel some
of the problems through interventions and provision of information concerning health.
Meeting with people in different facilities during the community engagement was the
positive experience. People in the facilities we approached appeared to have gain hope and
develop trust to us when we came and presented ourselves and introduced our profession
to them, that as we will conduct community engagement in their area either school or clinic,
we will impact their lives through helping them and bring about change in the community as
whole. “When you love people and have a desire to make a profound, positive impact upon
the world, then will you have accomplished the meaning to live” Sasha Azevedo. With
regards to us as participants, knowing that people have trusts and have puts their hope on
us, also kind of providing us with motivation to intervening effectively with an aim of making
their dreams come true.
The greats experience of working as a transdisciplinary team. As Health Science students of
course we had an idea of what other disciplines does in the hospital and we also met them
in the hospitals during fieldwork and electives. But we had like limited time and less
opportunity to approach client as a team. Community engagement gave us the opportunity
to seat down and plan together. Through this system we got the opportunity to learn a lot’s
concerning different types of assessment tools they use as well as their intervention in
details. We also learn t a lots from speech and language therapy as well audiology. Since we
look at different areas, community engagement gave us an opportunity to see and
experience how things come together with one aim of making client’s life better. Such as in
the case of child in the community with Cerebral palsy (quad) acquired during congenital,
with no speech, upper and lower limbs severe hypertonia. Therefore, the child needs to be
approach by as team, with speech therapy looking as speech and OT looking at deficits
performance components and areas (bathing, feeding, toileting, etc). Therefore child is
approached as transdisciplinary team and effective result are produced.
There is more that still need to be done in the communities to make people lives well. I
understand that students have limited time in the community blog but communities require
lot’s of interventions. Some people in the communities are so clueless concerning health
due to so many grounds, which could be lack of education which is a big crisis in our
country, substance abuse and contributes to so many things because when some people are
under the influence participate in so many risk tasks such as commits crime, victimization,
contracting viruses through unprotected sex, etc. Therefore lot’s of awareness need to be
made about health related issues that different communities deal with at different severity.
Therefore government need to be encouraged to make create more organizations that will
facilitate awareness in the communities. “I am convinced that knowledge is power – to
overcome the past, to change our own situations, to fight new obstacles, to make better
decisions” Benjamin Carson. Therefore knowledge needs to be spread to all people to
change their lives and look things at a different perspective.
