Discuss Allport’s concept of psychological healthy personality. Describe how Freud’s three levels of mental life relate to his concept of the provinces of the mind. Solution According to Allport psychologically healthy humans tend to be motivated by present conscious drives. Such individuals seek to establish new tensions. It was his belief that individuals are capable of proactive behavior. This suggests that a person can consciously behave in new as well as creative ways that help in promotion of their growth and change. As per Allport, psychologically healthy individuals tend to engage in proactive behaviors. The 6 criteria he gave for psychological health are given as follows: 1. There is an extension of the sense of self 2. Have warm relationships with other individuals 3. Self acceptance 4. Have a realistic view of world 5. Insight 6. Have a unifying philosophy of life Allport also believed that people of intrinsic religious orientation are psychologically healthy whereas those who have an extrinsic religious orientation tend to have poor psychological health. Several years before Freud developed the notion of the id, ego, and superego, he formulated the concept of the unconscious, preconscious, and conscious. The unconscious is that dynamic aspect of mental life which is responsible for a large number of our behaviors. It not only consists of repressed experiences but also experiences that were never conscious. The preconscious categorizes those experiences that were less threatening as compared to those of the unconscious. Such ideas have the tendency of becoming conscious with different degrees of difficulty and are mainly dependent on their potential threat to ego. The conscious mind has a minor role comparatively in Freudian psychology. Those ideas that are in our awareness comprise of the conscious mind. The id is the completely unconscious amoral side of our nature that serves the pleasure principle. Ego which is the sense of I, can be unconscious, preconscious, or conscious and serves the reality principle. The superego is also completely unconscious and serves idealistic as well as moral principles..
