As part of the Women and Girls in Astronomy project, IAU Executive Committee Working Group
Women in Astronomy and the Office for Astronomy Outreach (OAO) invite youth from 12 to 18
years old to participate in the Discover an Astronomer Poster Contest for a chance to win a
telescope and share their creativity with the world!
Create a poster or short video (max 3 minutes) featuring an inspiring astronomer.The subject
of the poster must be an astronomer who identifies as a gender minority (including women)
in STEM. We hope that the submitted posters will represent a wide cross-section of the global
population, including subjects with any differing ability, from any economic background, eth-
nicity, or sexual orientation.
There will be three categories for winning entries:
• Best poster 12 to 14 years old
• Best poster 15 to 18 years old
• Best video
To enter, submit this form; the competition will close on 30 March 2023 23:59 local time. The
best submission in each category will be awarded one BRESSER NANO AR-70/700 AZ telescope,
courtesy of Sterren Schitteren Voor Iedereen (Stars Shine For Everyone - SSVI), University Ghent
- Dept. Physics and Astronomy, Leiden University, and BRESSER. Submissions will be selected by
representatives from the IAU Executive Committee Working Group Women in Astronomy, the
OAO, SSVI and Leiden University based on the posters’ creativity and research.

Please notice that you will need a Google account to upload your artwork. If you don’t have
a Google account, please email your application to suzana.filipecki@oao.iau.org. Your email
should clearly state the Name, Email, Age, City, and Country of the contestant. Each entry
should be submitted by a single email or form. Please do not include multiple submissions on
a single email or submission form.
If the contestant is 16 years old or younger, please state that your legal guardian has read and
agrees with the Contest Terms and Conditions stated in this form.

Eligibility, Terms and Conditions
Eligibility:
• Our Contest is free to enter.
• We limit one entry per participant.
• All contestants must be a real person, no younger than 12 years old, and no older than 18
years old in 2023 (proof of age may be required).
• Any entries received after the closing of the Contest (30 March 2023) will be invalid and
will not be entered into the Contest.

Terms and Conditions:
• The OAO reserves the right to make changes to the Contest at any time without prior no-
tice, to temporarily interrupt the Contest, or to cancel the Contest without justifying or being
in any way accountable for this decision. No damages or compensation may be claimed.
• All decisions of Contest organisers about any aspect of the Contest, including eligibility
or disqualification of applications, comments or images are final and cannot be appealed.
• By entering the Contest, contestants agree to receive a follow-up email for the purpose
of evaluating the Contest and its learning outcomes.
• The winners of the Discover an Astronomer Poster Contest agree to send images and
a short written report documenting the use of the telescope within 15 days of receiving an
e-mail request from organisers: IAU Office for Astronomy Outreach, Sterren Schitteren Voor
Iedereen (Stars Shine for Everyone — SSVI).
• By submitting information for the Contest, contestants agree that their work will be dis-
tributed under Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 Interna-
tional License. This means that others are not allowed to adapt contestants’ work and that
commercial use of the work is not allowed.
• The OAO and its partners can’t guarantee a delivery date for the awarded prizes or en-
sure the delivery of the prizes.
• The winner will be sent a telescope (in one single package) without a tracking number.
Please be advised that the prizes can’t be shipped to Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria or Crimea.
Further, there may be disruptions when sending the prize to Afghanistan, Algeria, Bahrain,
Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Nigeria, Oman, State of Palestine, Qatar, Saudi
Arabia, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. These shipment restrictions in no way pro-
hibit individuals from these countries to apply, but they may interfere with the OAO’s ability to
ship the prizes and the timeline for the recipients to receive them.
• Unless otherwise stated in advance, the winner must respond to the announcement
within 3 working days following email contact, otherwise, another winner will be chosen.
• No responsibility can be accepted for entries not received for whatever reason.

On collection and use of data:
• By submitting information for the Contest, contestants consent to the use, reproduction,
publication, transmission and dissemination of their artwork, name, country, and age by the
competition organizers and/or partners, without compensation, in any publications or pro-
motional material, to promote the Contest and its winners.
• By entering the Contest, contestants agree that their information will be transferred
to third-parties’ platforms (external providers of IT related services), including Google,
Metaverse, and Twitter.
• At any time, contestants can have their data deleted by withdrawing from the contest
via email request to Suzana Filipecki Martins, suzana.filipecki@oao.iau.org.
