Disasters frequently cause loss of life and destruction of livelihoods in the Caribbean region. As climate change makes natural hazards more severe and frequent, disaster risk reduction is increasingly important. The Sendai Framework identifies priorities and targets to prevent new and reduce existing disaster risks through comprehensive disaster management. The Caribbean Risk and Disaster Management Youth Platform (CARIDIMA) plays an important role in promoting collaboration across sectors to address disaster impacts. CARIDIMA is a youth-led network of over 130 professionals from Caribbean countries and territories working to reduce disaster risks and strengthen climate resilience in the region.

1) The NARRI Consortium was formed by 10 international NGOs to provide comprehensive disaster risk reduction programming in Bangladesh through leveraging each organization's strengths and expertise.
2) Bangladesh faces numerous natural hazards including floods, cyclones, earthquakes, and drought that have killed over 190,000 people and affected over 320 million in the last 30 years. The population and economic activity in high risk areas have also increased vulnerability.
3) By working together, the NARRI Consortium aims to have a greater impact through complementing efforts, avoiding duplications, and gaining credibility for advocacy. The Consortium has reached over 1 million people so far and established strategic partnerships with the government of Bangladesh.

Morocco has developed a new national strategy for risk management in response to increasing natural disasters. [1] The strategy involves assessing risks from floods, earthquakes, tsunamis and droughts through modeling their impacts on infrastructure, population and the economy. [2] It also analyzes mitigation measures and calculates annual losses to inform decision making. [3] Short-term actions include establishing a coordination bureau, developing sectoral strategies, and creating financial instruments to fund preparedness, response and insurance programs.

FIGHTING INEQUALITY FOR A RESILIENT FUTURE.
- IDDRR 2023 key message
Poverty, inequality and discrimination are causes and consequences of growing disaster risk.
Inequality creates the conditions that render people exposed and vulnerable to disasters. Disasters also disproportionately impact the poorest and most at risk people, thus worsening inequality. Reducing vulnerability to disasters requires addressing these dimensions
By 2030, with current climate projections, the world will face some 560 disasters per year. An additional estimated 37.6 million people will be living in conditions of extreme poverty due to the impacts of climate change and disasters by 2030. A “worst case” scenario of climate change and disasters will push an additional 100.7 million into poverty by 2030.
We can curb the destructive power of hazards—in other words, stop them from turning into disasters—through careful and coordinated planning that is designed to reduce people’s exposure and vulnerability to harm.
Greater investments are needed in the collection and use of disaggregated data, both to better understand disproportionate disaster impacts and exposure, and to inform resilience-building plans.
Taking Stock of SDG Actions
The document discusses challenges and opportunities for implementing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Growing inequities and pressures on the planet are reversing hard-won development gains. Humanitarian needs are also rising, as disasters and conflict create enormous human suffering. The United Nations Global Assessment Report on Disaster Risk Reduction (GAR 2023) highlights how resilience can be strengthened to withstand and respond to shocks. This includes investments in early warning systems where the benefits triple in vulnerable contexts because of their proven ability to reduce damage.

Poverty, inequality and discrimination are causes and consequences of growing disaster risk.
Inequality creates the conditions that render people exposed and vulnerable to disasters. Disasters also disproportionately impact the poorest and most at risk people, thus worsening inequality. Reducing vulnerability to disasters requires addressing these dimensions
By 2030, with current climate projections, the world will face some 560 disasters per year. An additional estimated 37.6 million people will be living in conditions of extreme poverty due to the impacts of climate change and disasters by 2030. A “worst case” scenario of climate change and disasters will push an additional 100.7 million into poverty by 2030.
We can curb the destructive power of hazards—in other words, stop them from turning into disasters—through careful and coordinated planning that is designed to reduce people’s exposure and vulnerability to harm.
Greater investments are needed in the collection and use of disaggregated data, both to better understand disproportionate disaster impacts and exposure, and to inform resilience-building plans.
Taking Stock of SDG Actions

Climate hazards threaten fiscal sustainability, especially for small island developing states and least developed countries. Repeated cyclones have significantly increased Dominica's government debt. There are different types of losses and damages from climate hazards, including to public and private assets, as well as lost income and revenue. An ideal risk management strategy blends approaches of risk reduction, risk retention and risk transfer. Earmarked funding for loss and damage requires differentiation from adaptation and disaster risk reduction support. Tailored approaches are needed that are responsive to country circumstances. Support must also be considered for vulnerable countries no longer eligible for development assistance.

Monitor indicators of genetic diversity from space using Earth Observation data
Genetic diversity within and among populations is essential for species persistence. While targets and indicators for genetic diversity are captured in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, assessing genetic diversity across many species at national and regional scales remains challenging. Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) need accessible tools for reliable and efficient monitoring at relevant scales. Here, we describe how Earth Observation satellites (EO) make essential contributions to enable, accelerate, and improve genetic diversity monitoring and preservation. Specifically, we introduce a workflow integrating EO into existing genetic diversity monitoring strategies and present a set of examples where EO data is or can be integrated to improve assessment, monitoring, and conservation. We describe how available EO data can be integrated in innovative ways to support calculation of the genetic diversity indicators of the GBF monitoring framework and to inform management and monitoring decisions, especially in areas with limited research infrastructure or access. We also describe novel, integrative approaches to improve the indicators that can be implemented with the coming generation of EO data, and new capabilities that will provide unprecedented detail to characterize the changes to Earth’s surface and their implications for biodiversity, on a global scale.

- 1. MESSAGE ON THE OCCASION OF THE INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR DISASTER RISK REDUCTION 2021 Every year, with the onset of gradual or sudden disasters, many lives are lost, and livelihoods are destroyed. Caribbean Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are particularly vulnerable to natural hazards and disasters, which are becoming more and more severe and frequent every year, posing increasingriskstotheirpopulations.Forthisreason,DisasterRiskReduction(DRR)mustbehighon ourglobalagenda. Ontoday'sInternationalDayforDisasterReduction2021(#IDDRR21#DRRday),inlinewiththefocus theme "International Cooperation for Developing Countries to Reduce their Disaster Risk and Losses",wemustemphasizetheimportanceofcollaborationbetweenalltherelevantstakeholders frommultiplesectorsofthesocietyandthuspromoteconcreteactionstoaddresstheoverarching, andsometimesoverwhelming,impactsforourCaribbeanregion. Tothisend,theSendaiFrameworkforDisasterRiskReduction2015-2030hasidentifiedsevenclear targets and four priorities for action to prevent new and reduce existing disaster risks, which will likelyensureComprehensiveDisasterManagement(CDM)intheCaribbean,asithasbeenpursuedby the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), the relevant regional inter- governmental body of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). Therefore, harmonizing our individual and collective efforts, and linking local, national, regional and international partnerships, would only strengthenourimpetusforDRRandCDM. In this scenario, the Caribbean Risk and Disaster Management Youth Platform (CARIDIMA) is comingtoplayaveryimportantrole.CARIDIMAisanetworkofyoungprofessionalsfromacrossthe Caribbean,whosharethevisionofaclimate-changeresilientregionwithlaws,policyandprocedures whichleavenoonebehindbypreparingcitizenstorespondeffectivelytoweather,climate,biological andgeo-relatedhazards. Notably,CARIDIMAwasestablishedwiththesupportoftheUnitedNationsEducational,Scientific andCulturalOrganization–UNESCO,throughitsSpecialInitiativefortheCaribbean,aimingtobea youth-ledandyouth-drivenplatformofprofessionalsfrommultiplesectors,withdiverseexperience andexpertise,whowillworkvoluntarilytopromoteDRRandCDMintheregion.
